Abstract

The MUon Scattering Experiment (MUSE) was motivated by the proton radius puzzle arising from the discrepancy between muonic hydrogen spectroscopy and electron–proton measurements. The MUSE physics goals also include testing lepton universality, precisely measuring two-photon exchange contribution, and testing radiative corrections. MUSE addresses these physics goals through simultaneous measurement of high precision cross sections for electron–proton and muon–proton scattering using a mixed-species beam. The experiment will run at both positive and negative beam polarities. Measuring precise cross sections requires understanding both the incident beam energy and the radiative corrections. For this purpose, a lead-glass calorimeter was installed at the end of the beam line in the MUSE detector system. Here, in this article, we discuss the detector specifications, calibration and performance. We demonstrate that the detector performance is well reproduced by simulation, and meets experimental requirements.

Design and simulation of a SiPM-on-tile ZDC for the future EIC, and its performance with graph neural networks

We present a design for a high-granularity zero-degree calorimeter (ZDC) for the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The design uses SiPM-on-tile technology and features a novel staggered-layer arrangement that improves spatial resolution. To fully leverage the design’s high granularity and non-trivial geometry, we employ graph neural networks (GNNs) for energy and angle regression as well as signal classification. The GNN-boosted performance metrics meet, and in some cases, significantly surpass the requirements set in the report on science requirements and detector requirements for the EIC (Yellow Report), laying the groundwork for enhanced measurements that will facilitate a wide physics program. Our studies show that GNNs can significantly enhance the performance of high-granularity CALICE-style calorimeters by automating and optimizing the software compensation algorithms required for these systems. This improvement holds true even in the case of complicated geometries that pose challenges for image-based AI/ML methods.

Challenges with Heat Flux Calorimeters used in Arc Jets

Occasionally large errors have occurred in some of the calorimeters used in the arc jet facilities. Some slug calorimeters would measure twice the expected heat flux and some Coaxial TC calorimeters would measure half the expected heat flux. While these errors in heat flux measurements are easy to identify and discard / dismiss, the concern is that less spectacular errors are difficult to detect. This inspired a critical look at the calorimetry used to measure stagnation heat flux in the NASA Ames Arc Jet facilities. Numerous sources of error were investigated, and the culprit in the case of slug calorimeters was determined to be leaks in the stagnation calorimeter assembly resulting in flow along the side of the slug. In the case of the coaxial TC calorimeter, it is hypothesized that in some calorimeters there is a partial electrical short circuit in the Coaxial TC sensor element somewhere in the middle of the calorimeter.
