Abstract

An Incident Response Plan (IRP) is a document that is created and maintained by an organization that provides guidance in the event of a cyber incident. The primary objectives of an IRP are to aid in the detection, response, and recovery from incidents, as well as to enhance preparation and preventative measures. An IRP should outline specific procedures at each stage of an incident, with the goal of minimizing asset damage, data leakage, and operational impact. By investing in a well-defined IRP, organizations can better manage and mitigate risks associated with cyber threats, ensuring business continuity and resilience. This poster summarizes incident response guidelines for wind energy, which faces unique cybersecurity and physical challenges.

Grid and Wind Transient Ride Through Assessment of Type-5 Synchronous Wind Turbine

The integration of the inverter-based renewable energy resources is increasing and replacing conventional synchronous generators in the evolving bulk power system (BPS), impacting the system inertia along the way. Also, the limited over-current capability of power electronic converters continues to deteriorate the grid strength of the evolving power systems. Type-5 wind turbines have the potential to mitigate these problems because this configuration interfaces with the grid through a synchronous generator; hence, its operation and consequent grid impacts might mimic the conventional synchronous generator. The drivetrain of this type of turbines, however, is different from the more common Type-3 and Type-4 turbines. A hydraulic torque converter and gearbox with torque limiting feature are integral parts of a Type-5 wind turbine drivetrain, to isolate the wind speed variations at the wind turbine rotor from the grid connected generator side. This supports the synchronous operation of the generator. However, high fidelity models of Type-5 wind turbine drivetrain including these core components are not openly and widely available for grid integration and transient stability studies. Moreover, Type-5 turbines are not commonly deployed and hence its power generation and frequency stability characteristics are not widely publicized. This hinders appropriate assessment of Type-5 wind power plant's contribution to bulk grid resilience. This work provides transient stability assessment of a standalone Type-5 wind turbine. Normal operation and grid transient studies are performed to see the step load change and wind speed disturbance impacts on the Type-5 drivetrain and generation dispatch. Preliminary results show that Type-5 wind turbines can support load changes of between 0.6 p.u to 1.15 p.u. Beyond this point, the synchronization of the generator starts to deviate from its set point.

Operating Wind Turbine as Synchronous Generator: Modeling and Power-Hardware-in-the-Loop Demonstration

Grid-forming (GFM) control of Type 3 and Type 4 wind turbine generators (WTGs) has attracted substantial attention in power systems research; however, the limited overcurrent capability of power electronics converters continues to deteriorate the grid strength of the evolving power systems. Synchronous wind, also referred to as a Type 5 WTG, offers a unique GFM solution to address grid integration and grid strength issues by keeping the grid largely synchronous at very high integration levels of renewable generation. A Type 5 WTG interfaces with the electric grid via a synchronous generator driven by a variable speed hydraulic torque converter; hence, the wind rotor operates in variable-speed mode for maximum power generation, and the generator shaft remains synchronous to the grid. This paper develops and tests a high-fidelity model of a Type 5 WTG in a power-hardware-in-the-loop testing environment, and it presents its operation characteristics under different grid contingencies. The power-hardware-in-the-loop demonstration shows that a Type 5 WTG inherently behaves as a GFM unit and can obtain similar performance in terms of power response, wind rotor dynamics, and stability enhancement compared to a Type 3 WTG in GFM control mode. Furthermore, the paper provides further insight into how Type 5 WTGs can support the smooth transition to power systems with high integration levels of inverter-based resources.

Cybersecurity Incident Response Guide for Wind

As wind energy systems become increasingly digitized and interconnected, they face a growing array of cyber threats that can disrupt operations, compromise safety, and trigger cascading impacts across the energy ecosystem. The Wind Incident Response Guide provides a structured, wind-specific framework for preparing for, detecting, responding to, and recovering from cyber incidents. Drawing on lessons from field demonstrations, cyber-physical testbeds, and stakeholder engagement across the wind sector, this guide integrates technical, operational, and regulatory considerations to support asset owners, operators, and responders. It outlines key roles and responsibilities, maps incident response phases to wind-specific scenarios, and highlights applicable laws, regulations, standards, and best practices. By tailoring general cybersecurity principles to the unique architectures and operational constraints of wind systems—including remote access, legacy components, and environmental interfaces—this guide aims to enhance resilience, reduce response time, and support coordinated action across public and private stakeholders. It is intended as a practical resource for utilities, developers, regulators, and emergency managers working to secure the future of wind energy.
