Asymptotic spinspacetime

Abstract

We show that Poincaré invariance directly implies the existence of a complexified Minkowski space whose real and imaginary directions unify spacetime and spin, which we dub spinspacetime. Despite the intrinsic noncommutativity of spin, spinspacetime exhibits mutually commuting holomorphic coordinates. Its twistorial construction derives the Newman-Janis shift property of spinning black holes by massive half-Fourier transforming complexified on shell kinematics, which encode a spinning analog of equivalence principle.

Supertranslations from Scattering Amplitudes

On shell methods have found a new application to local observables such as asymptotic radiation fields and gravitational waveforms. While these observables are invariant under small gauge transformations, they are known to depend on a choice of asymptotic gauge; in gravity on asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes, this is a choice of Bondi-Van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs frame. In this Letter, we provide a method for capturing these supertranslations, to all orders in perturbation theory, using the on shell framework of scattering amplitudes.

Conservative Spin-Magnitude Change in Orbital Evolution in General Relativity

We show that physical scattering observables for compact spinning objects in general relativity can depend on additional degrees of freedom in the spin tensor beyond those described by the spin vector alone. The impulse, spin kick, and leading-order waveforms exhibit such a nontrivial dependence. A signal of this additional structure is the change in the magnitude of the spin vector under conservative Hamiltonian evolution, similar to our previous studies in electrodynamics. These additional degrees of freedom describe dynamical mass multipoles of compact objects and decouple for black holes. We also show that the conservative impulse, spin kick, and change of the additional degrees of freedom are encoded in the eikonal phase.

Tidal Love numbers of analog black holes

Tidal Love numbers quantify the conservative static response of compact objects to external tidal fields, and are found to vanish exactly for asymptotically flat black holes in four-dimensional general relativity. Many aspects of the physics of black holes have an analog in the theory of supersonic acoustic flows, including the existence of an event horizon and associated phenomena, such as quasinormal modes and superradiance. In this paper, we investigate the tidal Love numbers of acoustic black holes in different number of dimensions. We find that they exhibit a number of similar properties as higher-dimensional general relativistic black holes, such as logarithmic running with radial distance, and vanishing tidal response for special multipole moments. As a result, we show that the latter is a consequence of ladder symmetries, analogous to those identified for black holes.
