Abstract

Driving of the nuclear fusion reaction p + 11 B → 3α + 8.7 MeV under laboratory conditions by interaction between high-power laser pulses and matter has become a popular field of research, owing to its numerous potential applications: as an alternative to deuterium–tritium for fusion energy production, astrophysics studies, and alpha-particle generation for medical treatment. One possible scheme for laser-driven p– 11 B reactions is to direct a beam of laser-accelerated protons onto a boron (B) sample (the so-called “pitcher-catcher” scheme). This technique has been successfully implemented on large high-energy lasers, yielding hundreds of joules per shot at low repetition. We present here a complementary approach, exploiting the high repetition rate of the VEGA III petawatt laser at CLPU (Spain), aiming at accumulating results from many interactions at much lower energy, to provide better control of the parameters and the statistics of the measurements. Despite a moderate energy per pulse, our experiment allowed exploration of the laser-driven fusion process with tens (up to hundreds) of laser shots. The experiment provided a clear signature of the reactions involved and of the fusion products, accumulated over many shots, leading to an improved optimization of the diagnostics for experimental campaigns of this type. In this paper, we discuss the effectiveness of laser-driven p– 11 B fusion in the pitcher–catcher scheme, at a high repetition rate, addressing the challenges of this experimental scheme and highlighting its critical aspects. Our proposed methodology allows evaluation of the performance of this scheme for laser-driven alpha particle production and can be adapted to high-repetition-rate laser facilities with higher energy and intensity.

An ignition criterion for inertial fusion boosted by microturbulence

Turbulence on fine spatial scales enhances fusion reactivity, enabling ignition at lower temperature. A modified Lawson-like ignition criterion is derived for inertially confined plasmas harboring turbulent kinetic energy. For some turbulent energy spectra, hot spots ignite at lower energy density and smaller volume. While detrimental mixing effects typically accompany turbulence and obscure these advantages, targets might be engineered to drive flow in regions where it is beneficial. The optimal length scale for this driving is identified, typically lying in the micrometer range.

Bremsstrahlung constraints on proton-boron 11 inertial fusion

Proton-boron 11 (pB11) fusion is relatively safe and clean, but difficult to use for net power production, since bremsstrahlung radiation tends to radiate away power more quickly than it can be generated by fusion power, particularly once poisoning by alpha particles is taken into account. While in magnetic confinement fusion, this problem can be addressed by deconfining the alphas, in inertial confinement fusion (ICF), the alphas that heat the plasma linger for the duration of the reaction. Thus, it becomes essential to trap the bremsstrahlung radiation in the hotspot. Through burn simulations incorporating bremsstrahlung emission and reabsorption, we infer the necessary conditions to capture enough radiation to produce scientific breakeven in a pB11 ICF plasma. We find that breakeven requires a stagnation areal density roughly two orders of magnitude higher than the current state-of-the-art, at pressures three orders of magnitude higher.

Hot-spot model for inertial confinement fusion implosions with an applied magnetic field

Imposing a magnetic field on inertial confinement fusion implosions magnetizes the electrons in the compressed fuel; this suppresses thermal losses, which increases temperature and fusion yield. Indirect-drive experiments at the National Ignition Facility with 12 and 26 T applied magnetic fields demonstrate up to 40% increase in temperature, 3× increase in fusion yield, and indicate that magnetization alters the radial temperature profile [Moody et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 195002 (2022); Lahmann et al., APS DPP (2022)]. In this work, we develop a semi-analytic hot-spot model, which accounts for the two-dimensional (2D) Braginskii anisotropic heat flow due to an applied axial magnetic field. First, we show that hot-spot magnetization alters the radial temperature profile, increasing the central peakedness, which is most pronounced for moderately magnetized implosions (with 8–14 T applied field), compared to both unmagnetized (with no applied field) and highly magnetized (with 26 T or higher applied field) implosions. This model explains the trend in the experimental data, which finds a similarly altered temperature profile in the 12 T experiment. Next, we derive the hot-spot model for gas-filled (Symcap) implosions, accounting for the effects of magnetization on the thermal conduction and in changing the radial temperature (and density) profiles. Using this model, we compute predicted central temperature amplification and yield enhancement scaling with the applied magnetic field. The central temperature fits the experimental data accurately, and the discrepancy in the yield suggests a systematic (independent of applied field) degradation, such as mix, and additional degradation in the reference unmagnetized shot, such as reduced laser drive, increased implosion asymmetry, or the magnetic field suppressing ablator mixing into the hot-spot.
