Abstract

DyYMn2O6 crystallizes in the trigonal P3 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are three inequivalent Dy3+ sites. In the first Dy3+ site, Dy3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted DyO7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with three equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, edges with three equivalent DyO7 pentagonal bipyramids, edges with three equivalent YO7 pentagonal bipyramids, and edges with three equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Dy–O bond distances ranging from 2.29–2.44 Å. In the second Dy3+ site, Dy3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted DyO7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with three equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, edges with six YO7 pentagonal bipyramids, and edges with three equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Dy–O bond distances ranging from 2.30–2.34 Å. In the third Dy3+ site, Dy3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted DyO7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with three equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, edges with three equivalent DyO7 pentagonal bipyramids, edges with three equivalent YO7 pentagonal bipyramids, and edges with three equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. In the third Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted YO7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with three equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, edges with six DyO7 pentagonal bipyramids, and edges with three equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.30–2.45 Å. There are two inequivalent Mn3+ sites. In the first Mn3+ site, Mn3+ is bonded to five O2- atoms to form MnO5 trigonal bipyramids that share a cornercorner with one YO7 pentagonal bipyramid, corners with two DyO7 pentagonal bipyramids, corners with six equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, an edgeedge with one DyO7 pentagonal bipyramid, and edges with two YO7 pentagonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Mn–O bond distances ranging from 1.91–2.10 Å. In the second Mn3+ site, Mn3+ is bonded to five O2- atoms to form MnO5 trigonal bipyramids that share a cornercorner with one DyO7 pentagonal bipyramid, corners with two YO7 pentagonal bipyramids, corners with six equivalent MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, an edgeedge with one YO7 pentagonal bipyramid, and edges with two DyO7 pentagonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Mn–O bond distances ranging from 1.91–2.10 Å. There are ten inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded to one Dy3+, two Y3+, and one Mn3+ atom to form distorted ODyY2Mn tetrahedra that share corners with ten ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with four OYMn3 trigonal pyramids, edges with three equivalent ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, and an edgeedge with one ODyMn3 trigonal pyramid. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded to two Dy3+, one Y3+, and one Mn3+ atom to form distorted ODy2YMn tetrahedra that share corners with ten ODy2YMn tetrahedra, corners with four OYMn3 trigonal pyramids, edges with three equivalent ODy2YMn tetrahedra, and an edgeedge with one ODyMn3 trigonal pyramid. In the third O2- site, O2- is bonded to one Dy3+, two Y3+, and one Mn3+ atom to form ODyY2Mn tetrahedra that share corners with ten ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with two ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids, edges with three equivalent ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, and edges with two OYMn3 trigonal pyramids. In the fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded to two Dy3+, one Y3+, and one Mn3+ atom to form ODy2YMn tetrahedra that share corners with ten ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with two ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids, edges with three equivalent ODy2YMn tetrahedra, and edges with two OYMn3 trigonal pyramids. In the fifth O2- site, O2- is bonded to one Dy3+ and three equivalent Mn3+ atoms to form ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids that share corners with six ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with six ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids, and edges with three equivalent ODyY2Mn tetrahedra. In the sixth O2- site, O2- is bonded to one Dy3+ and three equivalent Mn3+ atoms to form ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids that share corners with six ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with six OYMn3 trigonal pyramids, and edges with three equivalent ODy2YMn tetrahedra. In the seventh O2- site, O2- is bonded to one Y3+ and three equivalent Mn3+ atoms to form OYMn3 trigonal pyramids that share corners with six ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with six ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids, and edges with three equivalent ODyY2Mn tetrahedra. In the eighth O2- site, O2- is bonded to one Y3+ and three equivalent Mn3+ atoms to form OYMn3 trigonal pyramids that share corners with six ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with six ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids, and edges with three equivalent ODyY2Mn tetrahedra. In the ninth O2- site, O2- is bonded to one Y3+ and three equivalent Mn3+ atoms to form OYMn3 trigonal pyramids that share corners with six ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with six ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids, and edges with three equivalent ODy2YMn tetrahedra. In the tenth O2- site, O2- is bonded to one Dy3+ and three equivalent Mn3+ atoms to form ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids that share corners with six ODyY2Mn tetrahedra, corners with six ODyMn3 trigonal pyramids, and edges with three equivalent ODy2YMn tetrahedra.

Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
