Requirements Document for a Replacement Data Acquisition System

Abstract

A flight vehicle is in the developmental stages. While in development flight testing is required by both the manufacturer and customer to rate design performance. The performance of the vehicle must fulfill the agreed upon requirements. Testing of a flight vehicle during operation requires various sensors in order to record and monitor performance for evaluation. A Data Acquisition System (DAQ) is needed in order to control and capture data from various sensors placed throughout the vehicle during flight. This DAQ will receive the analog data from the suite of sensors and convert them to a digital signal that can be transmitted to a recording station where the data will later be analyzed by test experts. Some of the key features to be included in the DAQ will be a self-check operation to verify the health of all sensors including the DAQ. The DAQ will also have the capability to store sensor calibration data files loaded during assembly and transmit those files to the recording station during flight. Breakthroughs in new technologies has allowed for higher resolution recording systems and faster sampling rates. Improved sensor data using a new Data Acquisition System (DAQ) can provide important answers to questions discovered during the last few flight tests. These questions arose when the flight system expressed unexpected behaviors. Having the capability of the new DAQ in flight tests would allow for more high-fidelity data to be captured from the system during flight tests and ultimately reducing the number of required flight test. Reducing the number of flight tests also reduce developmental cost and schedule.

Large language models for transportation research: Methodologies, state of the art, and future opportunities

The rapid rise of large language models (LLMs) is transforming transportation research, with significant advancements emerging between 2023 and 2025, a period marked by the inception and swift growth of adopting and adapting LLMs for various transportation applications. Despite these significant advancements, however, a systematic review and synthesis of the existing literature remains lacking. This paper aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive review of the methodologies and applications of LLMs in transportation. We explore key applications, including autonomous driving, travel behavior prediction, and general transportation-related queries, alongside LLM methodologies such as zero- or few-shot learning, prompt engineering, and fine-tuning. From the review, critical research gaps are identified. From the methodological perspective, many of the research limitations can be addressed by integrating LLMs with existing tools and refining LLM architectures. From the application perspective, research opportunities for LLMs to address various transportation challenges are also explored. By synthesizing these findings, this review not only presents the state-of-the-art LLM adoption and adaptation in transportation, but also proposes future research directions as well as insights and recommendations for policymakers and practitioners, paving the way for greater LLM-driven research innovations in transportation in the future.
