SHIELDS
Abstract
Los Alamos National Lab has developed SHIELDS, a comprehensive software platform that incorporates satellite observational data to determine the near-Earth surface charging environment (SCE) with high accuracy. SHIELDS is an effective line of defense for communication, navigation, and scientific satellites located in the Earth’s magnetosphere by predicting hazards resulting from solar storms. Advance warning of solar storms enables satellite operators to place onboard electronics or instruments in a safe mode until the danger has passed. The platform also supports design of more robust satellites. SHIELDS leverages the Lab’s 50 years designing and building spacebased sensors and studying space weather, and it has won a R&D 100 Award.
