NASA’s Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition (CSDA) Program Data System

Abstract

The National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition (CSDA) Program was established to identify, evaluate, and acquire data from commercial satellite companies that support and complement NASA’s Earth sciences missions and research goals. Since becoming a sustained program in 2020, CSDA has been developing a data system to provide scalable, efficient, continuous, and repeatable data management processes for all commercial data acquired by NASA. This includes providing access to commercial data to approved science investigators through NASA developed and vendor operated interfaces. As the commercial data user community and volume of data acquired by CSDA has grown, the team managing these data has adapted technologies and services to better address the data and information search, discovery, and access needs of the science user community. This presentation will provide an overview of CSDA Program data system activities including data availability, development of CSDA user interfaces, challenges in managing large-volume diverse datasets, and long-term data preservation activities to retain data for scientific reproducibility.

Integrated Large-Scale Data Management Platform for Photovoltaic Power Conversion Equipment (PCE) Reliability Data: Preprint

To meet the demand for accuracy and real-time capability of PV system degradation evaluation, massive volume data is needed to run high-fidelity and high-efficiency simulations and perform advanced data analysis. However, PV farm operators have a series of difficulties with PV inverter data, such as data collection from multiple channels, massive data storage, data management and massive data analysis. To address these challenges, we developed an integrated data management platform capable of data acquisition, processing, storage, query, and performing big data analysis utilizing AI algorithms. The platform can also achieve data correctness verification and provide an effective distributed data management solution to retrieve massive data and establish a connection to distributed computational frameworks.

Semantic Representation and Scale-Up of Integrated Air Traffic Management Data

Each day, the global air transportation industry generates a vast amount of heterogeneous data from air carriers, air traffic control providers, and secondary aviation entities handling baggage, ticketing, catering, fuel delivery, and other services. Generally, these data are stored in isolated data systems, separated from each other by significant political, regulatory, economic, and technological divides. These realities aside, integrating aviation data into a single, queryable, big data store could enable insights leading to major efficiency, safety, and cost advantages. In this paper, we describe an implemented system for combining heterogeneous air traffic management data using semantic integration techniques. The system transforms data from its original disparate source formats into a unified semantic representation within an ontology-based triple store. Our initial prototype stores only a small sliver of air traffic data covering one day of operations at a major airport. The paper also describes our analysis of difficulties ahead as we prepare to scale up data storage to accommodate successively larger quantities of data -- eventually covering all US commercial domestic flights over an extended multi-year timeframe. We review several approaches to mitigating scale-up related query performance concerns.
