Abstract

NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System’s (EOSDIS) was built to archive and distribute earth science data from flight and research programs. At the close of FY2020, the data collection had grown to over 42 petabytes distributed across the US. This presentation describes fundamentals associated with managing a free and open archive of this size for a worldwide, multi-discipline user community. The presentation is prepared for the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), which strives to enhance international coordination and data exchange and to optimize societal benefit. The Working Group on Information System and Services (WGISS) is a forum within CEOS for the collaboration with other international and domestic agencies io the development of Earth observation data archives, systems and services. This presentation reviews the construct of the EOSDIS archives, formats for long term archive, preservation of appropriate data and documents, and challenges facing the community.

Global compilation of soil methane uptake measurements from 1984 to 2018

This data package contains a global compilation of soil methane uptake measurements collected from published field studies between 1989 and 2022. The dataset was developed to support machine learning (ML) estimation of the global terrestrial methane soil sink and includes monthly methane uptake rates, measurement dates, site coordinates, and associated ecosystem information from different ecosystems. Data were compiled from 164 peer-reviewed publications across approximately 260 study sites, resulting in ~12,000 monthly observations after quality control screening and removal of manipulated experimental treatments. The database was further processed to generate site-averaged methane uptake estimates for comparison between process-based (PB) and ML models.

Let Our Powers Combine! Harnessing NASA's Earth Observatory Natural Event Tracker (EONET) in Worldview

Constellations of NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) satellites orbit the earth to collect images and data about the planet in near real-time. Within hours of satellite overpass, you can discover where the latest wildfires, severe storms, volcanic eruptions, and dust and haze events are occurring using NASA's Worldview web application. By harnessing a repository of curated natural event metadata from NASA Earth Observatory's Natural Event Tracker (EONET), Worldview has moved natural event discovery to the forefront and allows users to select events-of-interest from a curated list, zooms to the area, and adds the most relevant imagery layers for that type of natural event. This poster will highlight NASA Worldviews new natural event feed functionality.
