Satellite Instrument Calibration

Abstract

Satellite remote sensing is an integral part of global earth observation. Satellite remote sensing data enable us to observe the whole globe at a reasonably high frequency. To maintain the accuracy of satellite remote sensing data, it is critical to continuously perform instrument calibration throughout the lifetime of the mission. This presentation describes the common characteristics of earth observing satellite sensors, the calibration processes and potential issues, the implication on science data, and how we understand the globe.

On the Characterization and Mitigation of Noise in Space-borne Microwave Sounding Instruments

Space-borne microwave sounding instruments have become vital data sources for weather prediction and climate change studies. Among the various radiometer configurations, the total power microwave radiometer is particularly appealing for current and future operational satellites due to its superior sensitivity and simple design. However, its performance is vulnerable to degradation caused by receiver gain fluctuations, electronic 1/f noise, and other time varying receiver characteristics. For Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) users, 1/f noise introduces inter-channel correlations, complicating the assimilation of affected observations and reducing their accuracy. Addressing this noise issue in ground data processing system is essential to enhance the utility of microwave sounding data. This paper focuses on the characterization and mitigation of noise in current and future microwave sounding instruments, with particular emphasis on the impact of 1/f noise. Various methods are applied to quantitatively characterize noise features in both frequency and time domains. Additionally, the influence of calibration parameters on 1/f noise are analyzed. Based on these findings, we propose a mitigation algorithm for reducing noise during the on-orbit calibration of microwave sounding instruments, aiming to improve the quality of retrieved data for operational use.

New Instrument for Time-Resolved OH and HO 2 Quantification in High-Pressure Laboratory Kinetics Studies

Here, we have constructed a new time-resolved high-pressure fluorescence assay by gas expansion (HP-FAGE) apparatus, optimized for the detection of OH and HO 2 radicals in complex gas-phase reactions. The new instrument fills a gap in the existing experimental toolkit for chemical kinetics by enabling the quantification of two key reactive species with microsecond time resolution from high-pressure sources, which was previously not attainable. The HP-FAGE is interfaced with a flow reactor, designed for pressures up to 100 bar and temperatures up to 1000 K, in which reactions are initiated by laser photolysis of radical precursors at repetition rates of 1–10 Hz. The HP-FAGE samples gas out of the reactor into a miniature FAGE chamber, where OH is detected by resonant laser-induced fluorescence using a time-delayed probe laser pulse. HO 2 is converted to OH via reaction with NO and then detected by OH fluorescence. The novel FAGE design places the probe region very close to the gas expansion, minimizing the transport time of sampled molecules and resulting in time resolution better than 20 μs for both OH and HO 2 . We calibrate the sensitivity of HP-FAGE, validate its performance with measurements of well-known reaction kinetics (OH + CH 4 , OH + OH, OH + HO 2 , and HO 2 + HO 2 ), and discuss prospects for its future use.

Assessment of ICESat-2’s Horizontal Accuracy Using Precisely Surveyed Terrains in McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

This article presents an assessment of the horizontal accuracy and precision of the laser altimetry observations collected by NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) mission. We selected the terrain-matching method to determine the position of laser altimeter profiles within a precisely known surface, represented by a digital elevation model (DEM). We took this classical approach a step further, approximated the DEM by planar surfaces, and calculated the optimal position of the laser profile by minimizing the square sum of the elevation differences between reference DEMs and ICESat-2 profiles. We found the highly accurate DEMs of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (DV), Antarctica, ideal for this research because of their stable landscape and rugged topography. We computed the 3-D shift parameters of 379 different laser altimeter profiles along two reference ground tracks collected within the first two years of the mission. Analyzing these results revealed a total geolocation error (mean +1 σ ) of 4.93 m for version 3 and 4.66 m for version 4 data. These numbers are the averages of the six beams, expressed as mean +1 σ and lie well within the mission requirement of 6.5 m.
