Finding the Closest Surface Point

Abstract

To find the closest surface point to a given point is one of the most frequently used operations in geometric computation. Traditionally, this problem has been formulated by a linear Newton method. To improve robustness for this operation, I present a different formulation, with a second order method, for the general cases, and ways to handle the degeneracy at the apex of a cone, a commonly occurring surface degeneracy.
