Product traceability for NASA space systems

Abstract

Identification as a specific point in a quality publication revealed in the year 1962, that it was a somewhat controversial subject with something lacking in groundrule definitions. The basic key to 'traceability' is establishment of proper identification numbers. These are: (1) serial numbers for control of individual articles, assemblies or equipment; (2) lot numbers for control of materials, articles and/or assemblies produced in homogeneous groups or through a controlled process; (3) date codes on articles or materials made by a continuous or controlled process and on such items subject to variations or degradation with age; or (4) combinations of the above.
