ECMWF/NMC/GLAS Joint Simulation Study

Abstract

Simulation experiments to provide a quantitative assessment of the potential impact of proposed observing systems on large scale numerical weather prediction are conducted. Instruments to be simulated include current conventional and satellite observing systems, advanced passive sounders such as the AMTS and AMSU, and active LIDAR systems for the measurement of wind, temperature and humidity profiles. The potential impact of individual observing systems, the effect of coverage, resolution, accuracy and assimilation methodology are studied.
