Crack tip finite element analyses

Abstract

Computer-oriented finite-element techniques for extracting the required information about the influence of cracks on stress fields are reviewed based on the knowledge that cracks induce stress singularities. Attention is focused on modeling behavior at a crack tip. Also discussed are crack tip analysis, utility of crack tip finite elements, and newer developments for cases where the singularity is not known a priori, i.e. the strength of the singularity is not established in advance of the computation. Available results are briefly summarized.
