Large Space Telescope Mission analysis

Abstract

The total mission scenario from Shuttle/LST (Large Space Telescope) integration to ground return is described. The LST is to contain near-diffraction-limited, 2.4-m optics and a variety of instruments that will allow it to make observations from the ultraviolet to the infrared regions. Particular attention is given to the most important aspect of the LST development planning, which consists in the design for change in both configuration and operation. The discussion covers mission objectives, planning for scientific observation, and support operations. The inherent characteristics of the periodic Space Shuttle revisits and earth return capability provide the LST with a capability for growth that should be incorporated into every phase of its development.
