FLIGHT EXPERIENCES IN THE MERCURY PROGRAM

Abstract

At this time, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has successfully completed five manned space flights in Project Mercury. Two of these were suborbital, and of approximately 19 minutes duration, and each of these subjected the pilot to about 5 minutes of weightlessness. The remaining three manned flights were orbital. Two of these flights involved the completion of three orbital passes, or about hours of weightlessness. The last orbital flight was extended to six orbital passes with nearly 10 hours of weightlessness. As a result of these flights, we have gained a wealth of information about space and man's ability to function in this new environment. There is, however, much which is yet to be learned regarding both of these aspects.
