Cobalt-based pyroxenes: A new playground for Kitaev physics

Recent advances in the study of cobaltites have unveiled their potential as a promising platform for realizing Kitaev physics in honeycomb systems and the Ising model in weakly coupled chain materials. In this manuscript, we explore the magnetic properties of pyroxene SrCoGe 2 O 6 using a combination of neutron scattering, ab initio methods, and linear spin-wave theory. Through careful examination of inelastic neutron scattering powder spectra, we propose a modified Kitaev model to accurately describe the twisted chains of edge-sharing octahedra surrounding Co 2+ ions. The extended Kitaev–Heisenberg model, including a significant anisotropic bond-dependent exchange term with K/|J| = 0.96, is identified as the key descriptor of the magnetic interactions in SrCoGe 2 O 6 . Furthermore, our heat capacity measurements reveal an effect of an external magnetic field (approximately 13 T) which shifts the system from a fragile antiferromagnetic ordering with T N = 9 K to a field-induced state. We argue that pyroxenes, particularly those modified by substituting Ge with Si and its less extended p orbitals, emerge as a platform for the Kitaev model. This opens up possibilities for advancing our understanding of Kitaev physics.

Spin crossover transition driven by pressure: Barocaloric applications

This article describes a mean-field theoretical model for Spin-Crossover (SCO) materials and explores its implications. It is based on a simple Hamiltonian that yields the high spin molar fraction as a function of temperature and pressure, as well as a temperature–pressure phase diagram for the SCO transition. In order to test the model, it was compared with the giant Barocaloric Effect (BCE) of the SCO material [FeL 2 ][B 4 ] 2 . Furthermore, we found that optical phonons are responsible for 92% of the total barocaloric entropy change. DFT calculations successively indicates that, as expected, the majority of this effect can be traced to low frequencies modes of vibration (400 cm -1 ), associated to the Fe coordination.

Incommensurate Spiral Spin Order in CaMn 2 Bi 2 Observed via High-Pressure Neutron Diffraction

Here, high-pressure neutron diffraction is employed to investigate the magnetic behavior of CaMn 2 Bi 2 in extreme conditions. In contrast to antiferromagnetic ordering on Mn atoms reported at ambient pressure, our results reveal that at high pressure, incommensurate spiral spin order emerges due to the interplay between magnetism on the Mn atoms and strong spin–orbit coupling on the Bi atoms: sinusoidal spin order is observed at pressures as high as 7.4 GPa. First-principles calculations with a noncollinear spin orientation demonstrate band crossing behavior near the Fermi level as a result of strong hybridization between the d orbitals of Mn and the p orbitals of Bi atoms. Competing antiferromagnetic order is observed at different temperatures in the partially frustrated lattice. Theoretical models have been developed to investigate spin dynamics. This research provides a unique toolbox for conducting experimental and theoretical magnetic and spin dynamics studies of magnetic quantum materials via high-pressure neutron diffraction.

Novel Co 5 Cluster Based Triazole Bridged Cobalt-Fluorophosphate: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic and Heterogeneous Catalytic Epoxidation Studies

A novel triazole bridged cobalt fluorophosphate coordination polymer with the formula {Co 5 (1,2,4-triazole) 2 (OH) 2 (PO 3 F) 4 } n has been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray studies reveal that the compound comprises of Co 5 clusters which ultimately build the whole framework, here all cobalt centers are in octahedral geometry established from continuous shape analysis. All the cobalt centers are in Co(II) oxidation state and the results are supported by the bond valence sum (BVS) calculation. The sample has been characterized by single crystal X-ray, powder X-ray, FTIR and TGA analysis. The compound was tested for olefin catalysis performance and magnetism. Magnetization measurements reveal overall antiferromagnetic interactions among the Co(II) ions. The compound is very active in the catalytic transformation of olefins to their corresponding epoxides. In conclusion, catalytic epoxidation studies reveal that cyclohexene and styrene can be converted up to 97% with almost 65% selectivity of products with higher TON numbers.
