Integration of Landsat, Seasat, and other geo-data sources

The paper discusses integration of Landsat, Seasat, and other geographic information sources. Mosaicking of radar data and registration of radar to Landsat digital imagery are described, and six types of geophysical data, including gravity and magnetic measurements, are integrated and analyzed using image processing techniques.

California desert resource inventory using multispectral classification of digitally mosaicked Landsat frames

Procedures for adjustment of brightness values between frames and the digital mosaicking of Landsat frames to standard map projections are developed for providing a continuous data base for multispectral thematic classification. A combination of local terrain variations in the Californian deserts and a global sampling strategy based on transects provided the framework for accurate classification throughout the entire geographic region.

Multiple-input land-use system concept

Image based information system would accept data in a variety of formats and convert it to registered raster-scan with single format. Images could then be manipulated by system processor to read out desired information. Existing methods of digital-image processing could be modified to develop necessary software and hardware needed to implement system.

An image based information system - Architecture for correlating satellite and topological data bases

The paper describes the development of an image based information system and its use to process a Landsat thematic map showing land use or land cover in conjunction with a census tract polygon file to produce a tabulation of land use acreages per census tract. The system permits the efficient cross-tabulation of two or more geo-coded data sets, thereby setting the stage for the practical implementation of models of diffusion processes or cellular transformation. Characteristics of geographic information systems are considered, and functional requirements, such as data management, geocoding, image data management, and data analysis are discussed. The system is described, and the potentialities of its use are examined.

Multiple-frame, full resolution Landsat mosaicking to standard map projections

Landsat digital data are presently available by frames whose size and location are determined by satellite orbit. The utility of Landsat data was increased by the image processing support for JPL's planetary program which provided the basic software and procedures necessary for image mosaicking. The computer software has been extended to perform this task on Landsat Multi-spectral scanner imagery and a ten frame digital mosaic of the Southern California desert has been completed. Major processing steps include location of geographic points in the digital frame and of common geographic points in adjacent frames, conversion to a map projection, lateral 'rubber sheet' correction of the digital frames, brightness correction of adjacent frames, and mosaicking of the frames to eliminate overlap and produce a single large frame.

Detection of combined occurrences

In this paper it is supposed that the variables x sub 1,...,x sub n each have finite range with the variable x sub i taking on p sub i possible values and that the values of the variables are changing with time. It is supposed further that it is desired to detect occurrences in which some subset of the variables achieve particular values. Finally, it is supposed that the problem involves the detection of a large number of combined occurrences for a large number of changes of values of variables. Two efficient solutions for this problem are described. Both methods have the unusual property of being faster for systems where the sum p sub 1 +...+ p sub n is larger. The first solution is error-free and suitable for most cases. The second solution is slightly more elegant and allows negation as well as conjunction, but is subject to the possibility of errors. An error analysis is given for the second method and an empirical study is reported.

Computability of five-color maps

Aside from the mathematical question as to whether any planar map can be colored with four or five colors so that no adjacent regions are assigned the same color, there is a computational problem of finding a coloration for a given map. This report presents an algorithm for the five-color problem which has an asymptotic computing time which is proportional to the square of the number of regions, at worst. The algorithm can be modified to produce six-color maps in linear time. The algorithm has been implemented for practical use in an image processing system and can be used in practical cases to produce four-color maps.

Integration of socioeconomic data and remotely sensed imagery for land use applications

The Image Based Information System (IBIS) uses techniques of digital image processing to interface geocoded data sets, information management systems, thematic maps, and remotely sensed imagery. For two cases IBIS has been used to integrate remotely sensed imagery and socioeconomic data. In the first case thematically classified Landsat imagery covering Orange County, California is combined with census tracts and municipalities. In the second case, thematically classified Landsat imagery over Los Angeles, California is combined with census tracts.

IBIS - A geographic information system based on digital image processing and image raster datatype

IBIS (Image Based Information System) is a geographic information system which makes use of digital image processing techniques to interface existing geocoded data sets and information management systems with thematic maps and remotely sensed imagery. The basic premise is that geocoded data sets can be referenced to a raster scan that is equivalent to a grid cell data set. The first applications (St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and Los Angeles County) have been restricted to the design of a land resource inventory and analysis system. It is thought that the algorithms and the hardware interfaces developed will be readily applicable to other Landsat imagery.

Data management in pattern recognition and image processing systems

Data management considerations are important to any system which handles large volumes of data or where the manipulation of data is technically sophisticated. A particular problem is the introduction of image-formatted files into the mainstream of data processing application. This report describes a comprehensive system for the manipulation of image, tabular, and graphical data sets which involve conversions between the various data types. A key characteristic is the use of image processing technology to accomplish data management tasks. Because of this, the term 'image-based information system' has been adopted.
