Sea level variabilities in the Gulf Stream between Cape Hatteras and 50 deg W - A Geosat study

Sea level variabilities in the Gulf Stream between Cape Hatteras and 50 deg W were examined by studying sea level residuals, relative to a 2-yr mean sea level, obtained from Geosat altimetry data for the period between November 1986 and December 1988. An array of sea-level time series was constructed for a region bounded by 30 deg N and 45 deg N in latitude and by 80 deg W and 50 deg W longitude. It is shown that the spectral characteristics of this time series varies with geographic location along the Gulf Stream path. Concurrent NOAA IR images are used to aid in the interpretation of sea level observations in terms of the variability of the stream's path, demonstrating the synergistic value of the combination of satellite-altimeter and IR data.

Altimetry, ship gravimetry, and the general circulation of the North Atlantic

Gravity accelerations estimated from satellite altimetric mean sea surfaces (Seasat and Geos-3) are compared to ship gravity measurements. Ship gravity are closer to an estimate based on least squares collocation, orbit perturbations, altimetry and terrestrial gravity than to an estimate based on Fourier transforms, orbit perturbations and altimetry only. Both altimetric estimates yield a smoothed picture of the geostrophic component of sea surface currents in the North Atlantic when gravity acceleration data from only nine cruises are subtracted from the altimetric gravity.

Observing oceanic mesoscale eddies from Geosat altimetry - Preliminary results

Mesoscale eddies constitute the most energetic component of the variability of ocean currents. Sea level variations measured by the Geosat radar altimeter are used to study the spatial and temporal scales of the eddy motion. An attempt is also made to map the temporal evolution of the eddy field in the region of the Agulhas Current south of Africa, where the eddy motions are among the strongest in the world. The results demonstrate that Geosat has provided an unprecedented opportunity to map from space the temporal evolution of sea level variability associated with the energetic eddies in the ocean.

Satellite altimetry - Observing ocean variability from space

The technique of satellite altimetry is discussed. The complexity of the procedure for attaining highly accurate measurements of the sea level, and the need for a multidisciplinary approach are emphasized. Progress in oceanographic research is reviewed, with the emphasis on results from Skylab and the GEOS-3 missions, as well as from Seasat whose altimeter was the first one designed for oceanographic applications. The challanges that lie ahead, including improving the overall measurement accuracy of altimeter observations, and the development of new techniques for utilizing the altimeter data, are formulated. Future plans for the satellite altimeter systems, Topex/Poseidon and ERS-1.

SPAN: Ocean science

The Space Physics Analysis Network (SPAN) is a multi-mission, correlative data comparison network which links space and Earth science research and data analysis computers. It provides a common working environment for sharing computer resources, sharing computer peripherals, solving proprietary problems, and providing the potential for significant time and cost savings for correlative data analysis. This is one of a series of discipline-specific SPAN documents which are intended to complement the SPAN primer and SPAN Management documents. Their purpose is to provide the discipline scientists with a comprehensive set of documents to assist in the use of SPAN for discipline specific scientific research.
