Abstract One of the challenges associated with understanding environmental impacts on cancer risk and outcomes is estimating potential exposures of individuals diagnosed with cancer to adverse environmental conditions over the life course. Historically, this has been partly due to the lack of reliable measures of cancer patients’ potential environmental exposures before a cancer diagnosis. The emerging sources of cancer-related spatiotemporal environmental data and residential history information, coupled with novel technologies for data extraction and linkage, present an opportunity to integrate these data into the existing cancer surveillance data infrastructure, thereby facilitating more comprehensive assessment of cancer risk and outcomes. In this paper, we performed a landscape analysis of the available environmental data sources that could be linked to historical residential address information of cancer patients’ records collected by the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. The objective is to enable researchers to use these data to assess potential exposures at the time of cancer initiation through the time of diagnosis and even after diagnosis. The paper addresses the challenges associated with data collection and completeness at various spatial and temporal scales, as well as opportunities and directions for future research.

Compared with conventional, solution-phase approaches, solid-state reaction methods can provide unique access to novel synthetic targets. Nanothreads—one-dimensional diamondoid polymers formed through the compression of small molecules—represent a new class of materials produced via solid-state reactions, however, the formation of chemically homogeneous products with targeted functionalization represents a persistent challenge. Through careful consideration of molecular precursor stacking geometry and functionalization, we report here the scalable synthesis of chemically homogeneous, functionalized nanothreads through the solid-state polymerization of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid. The resulting product possesses high-density, pendant carboxyl functionalization along both sides of the backbone, enabling new opportunities for the post-synthetic processing and chemical modification of nanothread materials applicable to a broad range of potential applications.

Inspired by the synthesis of XB 3 C 3 (X = Sr, La) compounds in the bipartite sodalite clathrate structure, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed on members of this family containing up to two different metal atoms. A DFT chemical pressure analysis on systems with X = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba reveals that the size of the metal cation, which can be tuned to stabilize the B–C framework, is key for their ambient-pressure dynamic stability. High-throughput density functional theory calculations on 105 Pm$\bar{3}$ symmetry XYB 6 C 6 binary-guest compounds (where X, Y are electropositive metal atoms) find 22 that are dynamically stable at 1 atm, expanding the number of potentially synthesizable phases by 19 (18 metals and 1 insulator). Here, the density of states at the Fermi level and superconducting critical temperature, T c , can be tuned by changing the average oxidation state of the metal atoms, with T c being highest for an average valence of +1.5. KPbB 6 C 6 , with an ambient-pressure Eliashberg T c of 88 K, is predicted to possess the highest T c among the studied Pm$\bar{3}$n XB 3 C 3 or Pm$\bar{3}$XYB 6 C 6 phases, and calculations suggest it may be synthesized using high-pressure high-temperature techniques and then quenched to ambient conditions.

Engineering multiscale structural hierarchies in glassy alloys enable a broad spectrum of potential applications. Metallic glasses were born in hierarchical structures from atomic-to-nanometer scales. However, the frozen-in structures in traditional metallic glasses prepared by rapid quenching techniques are challenging to tailor. Here, we show that a Pd 40 Ni 40 P 20 bulk nanostructured glass of polyamorphous interfacial structures was prepared by inert-gas condensation with a laser evaporation source, and its multiscale structures could be engineered. In-situ scattering experiment results reveal polyamorphous phase transitions occurred in the interfacial regions, which are accompanied by the evolution of medium-range order and the nanoscale heterogeneous structures during the condensation process of glassy nanoparticles under high pressure and the following heating process. Moreover, changes in the cluster connectivity resulting from repacking of the local ordering induced by pressure and temperature could be observed. The thermophysical and mechanical properties, including boson peaks, hardness, and elasticity modulus, could be changed as a function of heat-treatment parameters. In conclusion, our findings would shed light on the synthesis of bulk nanostructured glassy alloys with tailorable thermodynamic and dynamical behavior as well as mechanical properties based on the understanding of metastability for polyamorphous interfacial phases.
Nanothreads are one-dimensional nanomaterials comprised of a primarily sp 3 hydrocarbon backbone. They are typically formed through cycloaddition reactions induced by compression of small molecules to high pressures. Although nanothreads have been synthesized from a range of small molecule precursors (e.g., benzene, pyridine, aniline), the ability to control reaction pathways to produce atomically precise nanothreads with distinct chemical structures remains a difficult challenge. In this study, we show how heteroatoms incorporated within starting precursors can serve as “thread directing” groups by selecting for specific cycloaddition reaction pathways. By using a less-reactive diazine group within a six-membered aromatic ring, we successfully predict and synthesize the first carbon nanothread material derived from pyridazine (1,2-diazine, C 4 H 4 N 2 ). Compared with previous nanothreads, the synthesized polypyridazine, shows a predominantly uniform chemical structure with exceptional long-range order, allowing for structural characterization using vibrational spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results demonstrate how thread-directing groups can be used for precise reaction pathway control and the formation of chemically precise nanothreads with a high degree of structural order.
Zika virus (ZIKV) has had detrimental effects on global public health in recent years. This is because the management of the disease has been limited, in part because its pathogenic mechanisms are not yet completely understood. Infectious clones are an important tool that utilize reverse genetics; these can be used to modify the ZIKV genomic RNA at the DNA level. A homologous recombination clone was used to construct pWSK29, a low copy plasmid that contained sequences for a T7 promoter, the whole genome of ZIKV ZKC2 strain, and a hepatitis delta virus ribozyme. High fidelity PCR was then used to amplify the T7 transcription template. The transcript was then transfected into susceptible cells via lipofection to recover the ZIKV ZKC2 strain. Finally, the virulence of rZKC2 was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo . The rZKC2 was successfully obtained and it showed the same virulence as its parent, the ZIKV ZKC2 strain (pZKC2), both in vitro and in vivo . The 3730 (NS2A-D62G) mutation site was identified as being important, since it had significant impacts on rZKC2 recovery. The 4015 (NS2A, A157V) mutation may reduce virus production by increasing the interferon type I response. In this study, one of the earliest strains of ZIKV that was imported into China was used for infectious clone construction and one possible site for antiviral medication development was discovered. The use of homologous recombination clones, of PCR products as templates for T7 transcription, and of lipofection for large RNA transfection could increase the efficiency of infectious clone construction. Our infectious clone provides an effective tool which can be used to explore the life cycle and medical treatment of ZIKV.
Amorphous materials have no long-range order, but there are ordered structures at short range (2–5 Å), medium range (5–20 Å) and even longer length scales. While regular and semiregular polyhedra are often found as short-range ordering in amorphous materials, the nature of medium-range order has remained elusive. Consequently, it is difficult to determine whether there exists any structural link at medium range or longer length scales between the amorphous material and its crystalline counterparts. Moreover, an amorphous material often crystallizes into a phase of different composition, with very different underlying structural building blocks, further compounding the issue. Here, we capture an intermediate crystalline cubic phase in a Pd-Ni-P amorphous alloy and reveal the structure of the medium-range order, a six-membered tricapped trigonal prism cluster (6M-TTP) with a length scale of 12.5 Å. We find that the 6M-TTP can pack periodically to several tens of nanometres to form the cube phase. Our experimental observations provide evidence of a structural link between the amorphous and crystalline phases in a Pd-Ni-P alloy at the medium-range length scale and suggest that it is the connectivity of the 6M-TTP clusters that distinguishes the crystalline and amorphous phases. These findings will shed light on the structure of amorphous materials at extended length scales beyond that of short-range order.

Abstract We report a carbon‐boron clathrate with composition 2 La@B 6 C 6 (LaB 3 C 3 ). Like recently reported SrB 3 C 3 , [1] single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and computational modelling indicate that the isostructural La member crystallizes in the cubic bipartite sodalite structure (Type‐VII clathrate) with La atoms encapsulated within truncated octahedral cages composed of alternating carbon and boron atoms. The covalent nature of the B−C bonding results in a hard, incompressible framework, and owing to the balanced electron count, La 3+ [B 3 C 3 ] 3− exhibits markedly improved pressure stability and is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap predicted near 1.3 eV. A variety of different guest atoms may potentially be substituted within Type‐VII clathrate cages, presenting opportunities for a large family of boron‐stabilized, carbon‐based clathrates with ranging physical properties.
