Noise robust detection of quantum phase transitions

Quantum computing allows for the manipulation of highly correlated states whose properties quickly go beyond the capacity of any classical method to calculate. Thus one natural problem which could lend itself to quantum advantage is the study of ground-states of condensed matter models, and the transitions between them. However, current levels of hardware noise can require extensive application of error-mitigation techniques to achieve reliable computations. In this work, we use several IBM devices to explore a finite-size spin model with multiple “phaselike” regions characterized by distinct ground-state configurations. Using preoptimized Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) solutions, we demonstrate that in contrast to calculating the energy, where zero-noise extrapolation is required in order to obtain qualitatively accurate yet still unreliable results, calculations of the energy derivative, two-site spin correlation functions, and the fidelity susceptibility yield accurate behavior across multiple regions, even with minimal or no application of error-mitigation approaches. Taken together, these sets of observables could be used to identify level crossings in a simple, noise-robust manner which is agnostic to the method of ground state preparation. This work shows promising potential for near-term application to identifying quantum phase transitions, including avoided crossings and nonadiabatic conical intersections in electronic structure calculations. Derivation of low-energy Hamiltonians for heavy-fermion materials

Here, by utilizing a multiorbital periodic Anderson model with parameters obtained from ab initio band structure calculations, combined with degenerate perturbation theory, we derive effective Kondo-Heisenberg and spin Hamiltonians that capture the interaction among the effective magnetic moments. This derivation encompasses fluctuations via both nonmagnetic 4⁢𝑓 0 and magnetic 4⁢𝑓 2 virtual states, and its accuracy is confirmed through comparison with experimental data obtained from CeIn 3 . The significant agreement observed between experimental results and theoretical predictions underscores the potential of deriving minimal models from first-principles calculations for achieving a quantitative description of 4⁢𝑓 materials. Moreover, our microscopic derivation unveils the underlying origin of anisotropy in the exchange interaction between Kramers doublets, shedding light on the conditions under which this anisotropy may be weak compared to the isotropic contribution.

Persistent flat band splitting and strong selective band renormalization in a kagome magnet thin film

Magnetic kagome materials provide a fascinating playground for exploring the interplay of magnetism, correlation and topology. Many magnetic kagome systems have been reported including the binary Fe m X n (X = Sn, Ge; m:n = 3:1, 3:2, 1:1) family and the rare earth RMn 6 Sn 6 (R = rare earth) family, where their kagome flat bands are calculated to be near the Fermi level in the para magnetic phase. While partially filling a kagome flat band is predicted to give rise to a Stoner-type ferromagnetism, experimental visualization of the mag netic splitting across the ordering temperature has not been reported for any of these systems due to the high ordering temperatures, hence leaving the nature of magnetism in kagome magnets an open question. Here, we probe the electronic structure with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a kagome magnet thin film FeSn synthesized using molecular beam epitaxy. We identify the exchange-split kagome flat bands, whose splitting persists above the magnetic ordering temperature, indicative of a local moment picture. Such local moments in the presence of the topological flat band are consistent with the compact molecular orbitals predicted in theory. We further observe a large spin-orbital selective band renormalization in the Fe d xy + d x 2 -y 2 spin majority channel reminiscent of the orbital selective correlation effects in the iron based superconductors. Our discovery of the coexistence of local moments with topological flat bands in a kagome system echoes similar findings in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, and provides a basis for theoretical effort towards modeling correlation effects in magnetic flat band systems.

Impurity effects on local electronic structure of twisted bilayer cuprates

It has been recently proposed that a fully gapped d-wave superconducting phase emerges in twisted bilayer cuprates when twist angle is in the vicinity of 45°. By considering a twisted bilayer model with a moiré cell, we study the local electronic structure around a single-site impurity and impurity dimer in both topologically trivial and nontrivial superconducting states. Here we find that the topological nontrivial superconducting phase is robust against single scalar-potential impurity scattering but is very sensitive to the interlayer impurity dimer scattering, which avoids and enforces the creation of the subgap quasiparticle state. This behavior is intrinsic to the bilayer structure and topological nature, in contrast to the other types of impurities that inevitably bring subgap quasiparticle states. We expect that our results can contribute to the understanding of electronic properties of twisted bilayer cuprates systems.

Anisotropic hybridization in CeRhSn

The optical conductivity σ⁡(ω, T) of CeRhSn was studied by broadband infrared spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent spectral weight transfer occurs over high energy (0.8 eV) and temperature (~500 K) scales, classifying CeRhSn as a mixed-valent compound. The optical conductivity reveals a substantial anisotropy in the electronic structure. Renormalization of σ⁡(ω, T) occurs as a function of temperature to a coherent Kondo state with concomitant effective mass generation. Associated spectroscopic signatures were reproduced remarkably well by the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory using a momentum-independent self-energy. The theory shows that the anisotropy for energies > 10 meV is mainly driven by the bare three-dimensional electronic structure that is renormalized by local electronic correlations. The possible influence of magnetic frustration and quantum criticality is restricted to lower energies.

Excess heat capacity in magnetically ordered Ce heavy-fermion metals

Herein we study the magnetic heat capacity of a series of magnetically ordered Ce-based heavy-fermion materials, which show an anomalous T 3 heat capacity in excess of the phonon contribution in many materials. For compounds for which magnon models have been worked out, we show that the local-moment magnon heat capacity derived from the measured magnon spectra underestimates the experimental specific heat. The excess heat capacity reveals increasing density of states with increasing energy, akin to a pseudogap. We show that this anomalous temperature-dependent term is not associated with proximity to a quantum critical point, but is strongly correlated with T N , indicating the anomalous excitations are governed by the magnetic exchange interaction. This insight may hold key information for understanding magnetically ordered heavy fermions.

Magnetic field induced partially polarized chiral spin liquid in a transition metal dichalcogenide moiré system

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. Here, we focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer WSe 2 /MoSe 2 and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a 120° Néel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the v = 1/2 Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pumping under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.
