In-Situ Characterization of Dynamic Morphological and Phase Changes of Selenium-doped Germanium Using a Single Particle Cell and Synchrotron Transmission X-ray Microscopy

The dynamic information of lithium-ion battery active materials obtained from coin cell-based in-situ characterizations might not represent the properties of the active material itself because many other factors in the cell could have impacts on the cell performance. To address this problem, a single particle cell was developed to perform the in-situ characterization without the interference of inactive materials in the battery electrode as well as the X-ray-induced damage. In this study, the dynamic morphological and phase changes of selenium-doped germanium (Ge 0.9 Se 0.1 ) at the single particle level were investigated via synchrotron-based in-situ transmission X-ray microscopy. The results demonstrate the good reversibility of Ge 0.9 Se 0.1 at high cycling rate that helps understand its good cycling performance and rate capability. This in-situ and operando technique based on a single particle battery cell provides an approach to understanding the dynamic electrochemical processes of battery materials during charging and discharging at the particle level.

Blade-Type Reaction Front in Micrometer-Sized Germanium Particles during Lithiation

To investigate the lithium transport mechanism in micrometer-sized germanium (Ge) particles, in situ focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy was used to monitor the structural evolution of individual Ge particles during lithiation. Our results show that there are two types of reaction fronts during lithiation, representing the differences of reactions on the surface and in bulk. Further, the cross-sectional SEM images and transmission electron microscopy characterizations show that the interface between amorphous Li x Ge and Ge has a wedge shape because of the higher Li transport rate on the surface of the particle. The blade-type reaction front is formed at the interface of the amorphous Li x Ge and crystalline Ge and is attributed to the large strain at the interface.

A self-healing liquid metal anode with PEO-Based polymer electrolytes for rechargeable lithium batteries

In this study, a Ga-Sn liquid metal alloy material is demonstrated as a self-healing anode system due to its fluidity via operando synchrotron-based transmission X-ray microscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments. Cracks formed due to volume expansions can be recovered by the fluidity of the liquid metals. By incorporating with a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolyte at 60°C, the Ga-Sn anode shows a reversible lithium insertion and extraction process with a high initial discharge specific capacity of 682 mAh g -1 , followed by delivering a capacity of 462 mAh g -1 in the second cycle at C/20 rate. Furthermore, compared with its solid counterparts, the Ga-Sn liquid metal anode demonstrates a better capability to maintain its mechanical integrity and better contact with PEO solid electrolytes due to its advantageous features of the liquid. This study suggests a potential strategy to use liquid metal alloys with polymer solid electrolyte to solve the anode challenges in rechargeable lithium batteries.

In Situ and Operando Morphology Study of Germanium-Selenium Alloy Anode for Li-ion Batteries

Selenium-doped germanium (GeSe) micrometersized particles have been reported with good cycling performance and rate capability due to a Li-Se-Ge network formed during the first lithiation that provides a Li-ion fast pathway. To understand the effect of the Li-Se-Ge network at a high cycling rate, we monitored the morphology change of both pure Ge and GeSe particles during cycling with an in situ/operando focused-ion beam-scanning electron microscope method. Our results showed that the proposed inactive Li-Se-Ge network can provide fast Li-ion transport and also buffer volume variation, resulting in homogeneous volume change and uniform microstructural evolution.

A practical phosphorus-based anode material for high-energy lithium-ion batteries

State-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries cannot satisfy the increasing energy demand worldwide because of the low specific capacity of the graphite anode. Silicon and phosphorus both show much higher specific capacity; however, their practical use is significantly hindered by their large volume changes during charge/discharge. Although significant efforts have been made to improve their cycle life, the initial coulombic efficiencies of the reported Si-based and P-based anodes are still unsatisfactory (<90%). In this study, by using a scalable high-energy ball milling approach, we report a practical hierarchical micro/nanostructured P-based anode material for high-energy lithium-ion batteries, which possesses a high initial coulombic efficiency of 91% and high specific capacity of ~2500 mAh g –1 together with long cycle life and fast charging capability. In situ high-energy X-ray diffraction and in situ single-particle charging/discharging were used to understand its superior lithium storage performance. Moreover, proof-of-concept full-cell lithium-ion batteries using such an anode and a LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode were assembled to show their practical use. The findings presented here can serve as a good guideline for the future design of high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
