Scalable Synthesis of 2D Mo 2 C and Thickness‐Dependent Hydrogen Evolution on Its Basal Plane and Edges

Abstract 2D transition metal carbides (2D TMCs and MXenes) are promising candidates for applications of energy storage and catalysis. However, producing high‐quality, large 2D flakes of Mo2C MXene has been challenging. Here, a new salt‐assisted templating approach is reported that enables the direct synthesis of 2D Mo 2 C with low defect concentrations. KCl acts as a template to form an intermediate 2D product, facilitating Mo 2 C formation without coarsening upon melting. The thickness of the flakes produced can range from monolayer (0.36 nm) to 10 layers (4.55 nm), and the electrocatalytical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of 2D Mo 2 C is inversely proportional to its thickness. The monolayer Mo 2 C shows remarkable HER performance with a current density of ≈6800 mA cm − 2 at 470 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode and an ultrahigh turnover frequency of ≈17 500 s − 1 . This salt‐assisted synthesis approach can also produce WC and V 8 C 7 nanosheets, expanding the family of 2D carbides. The new pathway eliminates the need for layered ceramic precursors, making it a versatile approach to direct synthesis of MXene‐like 2D carbides.

Nanogenerator comprising piezoelectric semiconducting nanostructures and Schottky conductive contacts

A semiconducting device includes a substrate, a piezoelectric wire, a structure, a first electrode and a second electrode. The piezoelectric wire has a first end and an opposite second end and is disposed on the substrate. The structure causes the piezoelectric wire to bend in a predetermined manner between the first end and the second end so that the piezoelectric wire enters a first semiconducting state. The first electrode is coupled to the first end and the second electrode is coupled to the second end so that when the piezoelectric wire is in the first semiconducting state, an electrical characteristic will be exhibited between the first electrode and the second electrode.

On structuring the rules of a fuzzy controller

Since the pioneering work of Zadeh and Mamdani and Assilian, fuzzy logic control has emerged as one of the most active and fruitful research areas. The applications of fuzzy logic control can be found in many fields such as control of stream generators, automatic train operation systems, elevator control, nuclear reactor control, automobile transmission control, etc. In this paper, two new structures of hierarchical fuzzy rule-based controller are proposed to reduce the number of rules in a complete rule set of a controller. In one approach, the overall system is split into sub-systems which are treated independently in parallel. A coordinator is then used to take into account the interactions. This is done via an iterating information exchange between the lower level and the coordinator level. From the point of view of information used, this structure is very similar to central structure in that the coordinator can have at least in principle, all the information that the local controllers have.

L625 Lidar Measurements of Pinatubo Volcanic Cloud at Hefei

The Pinatubo volcano erupted violently between June 9-17, 1991. This eruption was much larger than the El Chichon volcanic eruption in April, 1982. Because of the effects on the global environment, much attention was focused on the measurements of the volcanic cloud. The 84 scattering-ratio profiles of the volcanic cloud have been obtained by our L625 lidar system. The conclusions from studies of the data are: (1) Pinatubo volcanic cloud was present over Hefei after 40 days from eruption; (2) the peak scattering ratio varied violently in July and August of 1991; (3) the height of the peak scattering ratio is between about 18 to 25 km; and (4) since August 28, 1991, the optical depth was about one order of magnitude larger than before the eruption.

A lidar equipped with photon counter for measuring stratospheric aerosols

A large lidar system was developed at the Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics. It is composed of a high power frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser (120 mJ at 532 nm, 1 mrad), a 651 mm diameter receiving telescope, and a 64 channel photon counter. The lidar observations are controlled by an IBM PC/AT computer. One of the projects is to use the lidar system to make regular observations of stratospheric aerosols. Profiles of scattering ratio have been obtained since November 1989. Meanwhile, an Xe-Cl laser (308 nm wavelength) was assembled to allow the lidar to make measurements of vertical ozone distributions.
