A global database of dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration measurements in coastal waters (CoastDOM v1)

Abstract. Measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) concentrations are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components of biogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1; available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.964012, Lønborg et al., 2023) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g. chlorophyll a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g. dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations of concentrations from all continents. However, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62 338 data points for DOC, 20 356 for DON, and 13 533 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average ± standard deviation (SD): 182±314 µmol C L−1; median: 103 µmol C L−1) is 13-fold higher than the average coastal DON concentration (13.6±30.4 µmol N L−1; median: 8.0 µmol N L−1), which is itself 39-fold higher than the average coastal DOP concentration (0.34±1.11 µmol P L−1; median: 0.18 µmol P L−1). This dataset will be useful for identifying global spatial and temporal patterns in DOM and will help facilitate the reuse of DOC, DON, and DOP data in studies aimed at better characterizing local biogeochemical processes; closing nutrient budgets; estimating carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous pools; and establishing a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters.

Giant electric field-induced second harmonic generation in polar skyrmions

Electric field-induced second harmonic generation allows electrically controlling nonlinear light-matter interactions crucial for emerging integrated photonics applications. Despite its wide presence in materials, the figures-of-merit of electric field-induced second harmonic generation are yet to be elevated to enable novel device functionalities. Here, we show that the polar skyrmions, a topological phase spontaneously formed in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 ferroelectric superlattices, exhibit a high comprehensive electric field-induced second harmonic generation performance. The second-order nonlinear susceptibility and modulation depth, measured under non-resonant 800 nm excitation, reach ~54.2 pm V −1 and ~664% V −1 , respectively, and high response bandwidth (higher than 10 MHz), wide operating temperature range (up to ~400 K) and good fatigue resistance (>10 10 cycles) are also demonstrated. Through combined in-situ experiments and phase-field simulations, we establish the microscopic links between the exotic polarization configuration and field-induced transition paths of the skyrmions and their electric field-induced second harmonic generation response. Our study not only presents a highly competitive thin-film material ready for constructing on-chip devices, but opens up new avenues of utilizing topological polar structures in the fields of photonics and optoelectronics.

Stacking disorder and thermal transport properties of α-RuCl 3

α-RuCl 3 , a well-known candidate material for Kitaev quantum spin liquid, is prone to stacking disorder due to the weak van der Waals bonding between the honeycomb layers. After a decade of intensive experimental and theoretical studies, the detailed correlation between stacking degree of freedom, structure transition, magnetic, and thermal transport properties remains unresolved. In this work, we reveal the effects of a small amount of stacking disorder inherent even in high quality α-RuCl 3 crystals. This small amount of stacking disorder results in the variation of the magnetic ordering temperature, and it suppresses the structure transition and thermal conductivity. Crystals with a minimal amount of stacking disorder have a T N > 7.4 K and exhibit a well-defined structure transition around 140 K upon cooling. For those with more stacking faults and a T N below 7 K, the structure transition occurs well below 140 K upon cooling and is incomplete, manifested by the diffuse streaks and the coexistence of both high-temperature and low-temperature phases down to the lowest measurement temperature. Both types of crystals exhibit oscillatory field-dependent thermal conductivity and a plateaulike feature in thermal Hall resistivity in the field-induced quantum spin liquid state. However, α-RuCl 3 crystals with a minimal amount of stacking disorder have a higher thermal conductivity that pushes the thermal Hall conductivity to be closer to the half-integer quantized value. Importantly, these findings demonstrate a strong correlation between layer stacking, structure transition, magnetic, and thermal transport properties, underscoring the importance of interlayer coupling in α-RuCl3 despite the weak van der Waals bonding.

High Entropy Oxide Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Relaxor ferroelectrics are important in technological applications due to strong electromechanical response, energy storage capacity, electrocaloric effect, and pyroelectric energy conversion properties. Current efforts to discover and design materials in this class generally rely on substitutional doping as slight changes to local compositional order can significantly affect the Curie temperature, morphotropic phase boundary, and electromechanical responses. In this work, we demonstrate that moving to the strong limit of compositional complexity in an ABO 3 perovskite allows stabilization of relaxor responses that do not rely on a single narrow phase transition region. Entropy-assisted synthesis approaches are utilized to synthesize single-crystal Ba(Ti 0.2 Sn 0.2 Zr 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 )O 3 [Ba(5B)O] films. The high levels of configurational disorder present in this system are found to influence dielectric relaxation, phase transitions, nanopolar domain formation, and Curie temperature. Temperature-dependent dielectric, Raman spectroscopy, and second-harmonic generation measurements reveal multiple phase transitions, a high Curie temperature of 570 K, and the relaxor ferroelectric nature of Ba(5B)O films. The first-principles theory calculations are used to predict possible combinations of cations to design relaxor ferroelectrics and quantify the relative feasibility of synthesizing these highly disordered single-phase perovskite systems. Further, the ability to stabilize single-phase perovskites with various cations on the B-sites offers possibilities for designing high-performance relaxor ferroelectric materials for piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and electrocaloric applications.

Stimulated Nucleation of Skyrmions in a Centrosymmetric Magnet

Understanding the dynamics of skyrmion nucleation and manipulation is important for applications in spintronic devices. In this contribution, the spin textures at magnetic domain-boundaries stimulated by application of in-plane magnetic fields in a centrosymmetric kagome ferromagnet, Fe 3 Sn 2 , with thickness gradient are investigated using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Switching of the in-plane magnetic field is shown to induce a reversible transformation from magnetic stripes to skyrmions, or vice versa, at the interface between differently oriented domains. Micromagnetic simulations combined with experiments reveal that the rotatable anisotropy and thickness dependence of the response to the external in-plane field are the critical factors for the skyrmion formation. In addition, it is shown that the helicity of skyrmions can also be controlled using this dynamic process. Finally, the results suggest that magnetic materials with rotatable anisotropy are potential skyrmionic systems and provides a different approach for nucleation and manipulation of skyrmions in spintronic devices.

Site Mixing for Engineering Magnetic Topological Insulators

The van der Waals compound, MnBi 2 Te 4 , is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator, providing a materials platform for exploring exotic quantum phenomena such as the axion insulator state and the quantum anomalous Hall effect. However, intrinsic structural imperfections lead to bulk conductivity, and the roles of magnetic defects are still unknown. With higher concentrations of the same types of magnetic defects, the isostructural compound MnSb 2 Te 4 is a better model system for a systematic investigation of the connections among magnetism, topology, and lattice defects. In this work, the impact of antisite defects on the magnetism and electronic structure is studied in MnSb 2 Te 4 . Mn-Sb site mixing leads to complex magnetic structures and tunes the interlayer magnetic coupling between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic. The detailed nonstoichiometry and site mixing of MnSb2Te4 crystals depend on the growth parameters, which can lead to ≈40% of Mn sites occupied by Sb and ≈15% of Sb sites by Mn in as-grown crystals. Single-crystal neutron diffraction and electron microscopy studies show nearly random distribution of the antisite defects. Band structure calculations suggest that the Mn-Sb site mixing favors a ferromagnetic interlayer coupling, consistent with experimental observation, but is detrimental to the band inversion required for a nontrivial topology. Overall, our results suggest a long-range magnetic order of Mn ions sitting on Bi sites in MnBi 2 Te 4 . The effects of site mixing should be considered in all layered heterostructures that consist of alternating magnetic and topological layers, including the entire family of MnTe(Bi 2 Te 3 )n, its Sb analogs, and their solid solution.
