Non-Conductive Polymers Enable Higher Ionic Conductivities and Suppress Reactivity in Hybrid Sulfide-Polymer Solid State Electrolytes

Hybrid ceramic-polymer solid state electrolytes are promising candidates to enable energy-dense lithium metal batteries by leveraging inorganic high ionic conductivity and flexible polymer mechanical properties. However, studies of hybrid electrolytes using sulfide-type inorganics such as Li3PS4 (LPS) have largely focused on combining the inorganic with commercial poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). PEO has proven to be insufficient for use in hybrid systems because it reacts with LPS and provides a competing pathway for ion transport, therefore producing a hybrid with low conductivity. Our work shows that using nonconductive, nonpolar polyethylene (PE) in a hybrid electrolyte with LPS eliminates both polymer and inorganic degradation and remarkably exhibit higher conductivities than those containing PEO at different polymer and salt concentrations. Using tracer-exchange NMR, we observe that the nonconductive nature of PE allows for iontransport through the inorganic whereas PEO provides a separate, competing pathway for lithium transport. Furthermore, compared to pure LPS, these hybrids enable longer term lithium cycling at 60°C. Our work shows that the path to enabling conductive and stable sulfide hybrids for solid state lithium metal batteries may be through the use of nonconductive, nonreactive polymers.

Patterns and ecological drivers of viral communities in acid mine drainage sediments across Southern China

Recent advances in environmental genomics have provided unprecedented opportunities for the investigation of viruses in natural settings. Yet, our knowledge of viral biogeographic patterns and the corresponding drivers is still limited. Here, we perform metagenomic deep sequencing on 90 acid mine drainage (AMD) sediments sampled across Southern China and examine the biogeography of viruses in this extreme environment. The results demonstrate that prokaryotic communities dictate viral taxonomic and functional diversity, abundance and structure, whereas other factors especially latitude and mean annual temperature also impact viral populations and functions. In silico predictions highlight lineage-specific virus-host abundance ratios and richness-dependent virus-host interaction structure. Further functional analyses reveal important roles of environmental conditions and horizontal gene transfers in shaping viral auxiliary metabolic genes potentially involved in phosphorus assimilation. Our findings underscore the importance of both abiotic and biotic factors in predicting the taxonomic and functional biogeographic dynamics of viruses in the AMD sediments.

Importance of multimodal characterization and influence of residual Li 2 S impurity in amorphous Li 3 PS 4 inorganic electrolytes

Amorphous Li 3 PS 4 (LPS) solid-state electrolytes are promising for energy-dense lithium metal batteries. LPS glass, synthesized from a 3:1 mol ratio of Li 2 S and P 2 S 5 , has high ionic conductivity and can be synthesized by ball milling or solution processing. Ball milling has been attractive because it provides the easiest route to access amorphous LPS with a conductivity of 3.5 × 10 –4 S cm –1 (20 °C). However, achieving the complete reaction of precursors via ball milling can be difficult, and most literature reports use X-ray diffraction (XRD) or Raman spectroscopy to confirm sample purity, both of which have limitations. Furthermore, the effect of residual precursors on ionic conductivity and lithium metal cycling is unknown. In this work, we illustrate the importance of multimodal characterization to determine LPS phase and chemical purity. To determine the residual Li 2 S content in LPS, we show that (1) XRD and 31 P solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) are insufficient and (2) Raman loses sensitivity at concentrations below 12 mol% Li 2 S. Most importantly, we show that 7 Li ssNMR is highly sensitive. Using 7 Li ssNMR, we investigate the effect of ball milling parameters and develop a robust and highly reproducible procedure for pure LPS synthesis. We find that as the residual Li 2 S precursor content increases, LPS conductivity decreases and lithium metal batteries exhibit higher overpotentials and poor cycle life. Furthermore, our work reveals the importance of multimodal characterization techniques for amorphous solid-state electrolyte characterization and will enable better synthetic strategies for highly conductive electrolytes for efficient energy-dense solid-state lithium metal batteries.
