Low fractional volume superconductivity in single crystals of Pr{sub 4}Ni{sub 3}O{sub 10} under pressure

Magnetotransport measurements of P⁢r4⁢N⁢i3⁢O10 single crystals performed under externally applied pressures up to 73 GPa in diamond anvil cells with either KBr or Nujol oil as pressure media yield signatures of superconductivity with a maximum onset temperature of approximately 31 K. True zero resistance was not observed, consistent with a nonpercolating superconducting volume fraction. Magnetization measurements provided corroborating evidence of superconductivity, with a pressure-dependent diamagnetic signal occurring below the onset temperature, and an estimate from the absolute value of the susceptibility suggests a superconducting volume fraction on the order of 10%. We observe sample to sample variations in the magnitude and pressure dependence of 𝑇𝑐 as well as a dependence on the configuration of electrical contacts on a given sample. Possible causes of this behavior may be significant inhomogeneities in the pressure and/or damage to the samples induced by the pressure media as well as inhomogeneities in the crystals themselves. The results imply that our as-grown P⁢r4⁢N⁢i3⁢O10 single crystals are not bulk superconductors but that there is a minority structure present within the crystals that is indeed superconductin

Pressure tuning of Kitaev spin liquid candidate Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$goo

The search for Kitaev's quantum spin liquid (KQSL) state in real materials has recently expanded with the prediction that honeycomb lattices of divalent, high-spin cobalt ions could host the dominant bond-dependent exchange interactions required to stabilize the elusive entangled quantum state. The layered honeycomb Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ has been singled out as a leading candidate provided that the trigonal crystal field acting on Co $3d$ orbitals, which enhances non-Kitaev exchange interactions between $J_{\rm eff}=\frac{1}{2}$ spin-orbital pseudospins, is reduced. We find that applied pressure leads to anisotropic compression of the layered structure, significantly reducing the trigonal distortion of CoO$_6$ octahedra. A strong enhancement of ferromagnetic correlations between pseudospins is observed in the spin-polarized (3 Tesla) phase up to about 60 GPa. Higher pressures drive a spin transition into a low-spin state destroying the $J_{\rm eff}=\frac{1}{2}$ local moments required to map the spin Hamiltonian into Kitaev's model. The spin transition strongly suppresses the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility and appears to stabilize a paramagnetic phase driven by frustration. Although applied pressure fails to realize a KQSL state, the possible emergence of frustrated magnetism of localized, low-spin $S=\frac{1}{2}$ moments opens the door for exploration of novel magnetic quantum states in compressed honeycomb lattices of divalent cobaltates.

Heavy ion induced e + e − pair production: Theoretical and preliminary experimental efforts

The production of real e + e − pairs is an important quantum electrodynamics phenomenon, that could have significant implications on low energy heavy ion dynamics. Here, we employ an established Schwingerinspired theory to study this effect in nuclear disintegrations. We extend the current framework with a Monte Carlo approach to include non-perturbative contributions. Simultaneously, we supplement our study with a preliminary experimental procedure, via the use of the Global Spectrometer for Positron and Electron Characterization developed at the Texas Petawatt Laser facility of the University of Texas at Austin. Theory and experiment agree within one order of magnitude, which signals promise for further investigations.

Low Temperature Dynamic Polaron Liquid in a Manganite Exhibiting Colossal Magnetoresistance

Polarons - fermionic charge carriers bearing a strong companion lattice deformation - exhibit a natural tendency for self-localization due to the recursive interaction between electrons and the lattice. While polarons are ubiquitous in insulators, how they evolve in transitions to metallic and superconducting states in quantum materials remains an open question. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to track the electron-lattice coupling in the colossal magneto-resistive bi-layer manganite La 1.2 Sr 1.8 Mn 2 O 7 across its metal-to-insulator transition. The response in the insulating high-temperature state features harmonic emissions of a dispersionless oxygen phonon at small energy transfer. Additionally, upon cooling into the metallic state, we observe a drastic redistribution of spectral weight from the region of these harmonic emissions to a broad high energy continuum. In concert with theoretical calculations, we show that this evolution implies a shift in electron-lattice coupling from static to dynamic lattice distortions that leads to a distinct polaronic ground state in the low temperature metallic phase - a dynamic polaron liquid.

Effects of Na deficiency on spin dynamics in the Mott insulating Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8

Here, we report on Raman scattering and 23 Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations of j eff = 1/2 hyperkagome antiferromagnet Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8 , which lies in the Mott insulating state. Our Raman scattering experiments unveil remarkable parallels between the magnetic excitations of the pristine Na 4 Ir 3 O 8 and the Kitaev honeycomb material Na 2 IrO 3 , which are characterized by dominant fractional spinon excitations. In the case of moderate Na-deficient Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8 , however, a substantial suppression of the magnetic excitations is observed, alluding to the notable influence of charge fluctuations on spin dynamics. In addition, our site-specific 23 Na NMR measurements offer further insights into the spin dynamics when a minor concentration of holes is introduced into a spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator. Specifically, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/ T 1 reveals the emergence of pseudogaplike correlations at the Na(2) site, alongside a critical slowing down behavior at the Na(1) and Na(3) sites. These findings showcase the intricate interplay between itinerant holes and magnetic correlations in a spin-liquid-like background.

Semirelativistic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics for the production of energetic neutrons in intermediate-energy heavy-ion reactions

Relativistic corrections have been made in the nonrelativistic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (amd) simulations to apply to the high-energy neutron production in the 12 C + 12 C and 16 O + 12 C collisions at incident energies of 290 and 400 MeV/nucleon. The corrections are made in kinematics alone and neither nucleon-nucleon inelastic scatterings nor meson productions are taken into account, and amd with the relativistic corrections is called semirelativistic amd. The three-nucleon collision (3NC) and Fermi boost in the collision processes are taken into account in the nonrelativistic AMD. Since the relativistic corrections tend to compensate in each other, the difference between the semirelativistic and nonrelativistic results become small. High-energy tails of the available experimental neutron double-differential cross sections, especially at larger angles, are well reproduced by amd with the 3NC term both with nonrelativistic and semirelativistic simulations. Furthermore, these results indicate that the high-energy neutrons are dominantly produced by the 3NC process in this incident energy range.

α -cluster microscopic study of C 12 + C 12 fusion toward the zero energy limit

The carbon burning process is a fundamental step of stellar evolution and governs the synthesis of chemical elements important for the formation of life. In this work, we utilize the microscopic hybrid α cluster (HαC) model and an analytical approach, both in the framework of the Imaginary Time Method (ITM), to study the carbon fusion reaction towards zero energy. We obtain the values of the cross sections, astrophysical factors and correlate our results to collective motion. We also include a calculation for the 2 + carbon fusion and discuss a possible experimental investigation. Our results confirm direct experimental and theoretical results close to the barrier, while suggest possible 2 + mixtures in the indirect experimental data. Furthermore, our study offers an accurate view of the burning process in the somewhat unexplored low energy region.

Evolution of magnetic surfboards and spin glass behavior in (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5

The unusual anisotropy of the spin glass (SG) transition in the pseudobrookite system Fe 2 TiO 5 has been interpreted as arising from an induced, van der Waals-like, interaction among magnetic clusters. Here we present susceptibility ($\chi$) and specific heat data ($C$) for Fe 2 TiO 5 diluted with non-magnetic Ga, (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5 , for disorder parameter $p$ = 0, 0.11, and 0.42, and elastic neutron scattering data for $p$ = 0.20. A uniform suppression of ${T_g}$ is observed upon increasing $p$, along with a value of $\chi \left( {{T_g}} \right)$ that increases as $T_g$ decreases, i.e. $d\chi ({T_g})/d{T_g} < 0$ We also observe $C\left( T \right) \propto {T^2}$ in the low temperature limit. In conclusion, the observed behavior places (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5 in the category of a strongly geometrically frustrated SG.

Reaction dynamics and in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section with 12 C+ 1 H at 95 MeV/nucleon

Reaction dynamics and effective in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross section are studied, using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) model with one of the simplest heavy ion collisions, 12 C+ ⁢1 H. The roles of different stochastic processes are studied, which are installed in the original AMD. One is the diffusion process as a part of the quantum fluctuation originated from the Fermi motion during the time evolution of the wave packets in the mean field (AMD/D). The second is a coalescence treatment for light clusters with A ≤ 8 (AMD/D-COALS). The third is the collision process, installed in AMD with different form of the in-medium NN cross sections. These different processes are examined, using the experimental angular distributions and energy spectra of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. The effective in-medium NN cross sections are evaluated from the simulated AMD events and compared with the experimentally extracted values. A good agreement is obtained between the AMD values from the 12 C + 1 H reaction at 95 MeV/nucleon and the experimental results for nuclear matter.

Pair production as a probe for the dynamics of nuclear fission and α decay

Electron-positron pairs can be produced via the Schwinger mechanism in the presence of strong electric fields. In particular, the fields involved in α decay and nuclear fission are strong enough to produce them. The energy of the e⁺⁢e⁻ pair is related to the relative distance and velocity of the daughter nuclei. Thus, the energy distribution of the produced pairs can give information about the dynamics of the fission and α-decay processes. A neck model of nuclear fission is used to illustrate how the pairs can be used as a probe of the dynamics.
