Role of redox-active biochar with distinctive electrochemical properties to promote methane production in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Biochar has been reported as an effective additive to improve methane production during anaerobic digestion (AD). However, the mechanism for such a stimulatory impact remains unclear. Here we investigated the capability of three pyrolytic biochars with distinctive electrochemical properties (BC300, BC500, BC700) to promote methanogenic performance of anaerobic digesters treating waste activated sludge (WAS). The cumulative methane production and the maximum methane production rate were increased by 46.9% and 181.6%, respectively, with BC300 amendment. By characterizing the electrochemical properties of biochar, our research team found out that methane production in AD of sludge was positively correlated to biochar’s electron-donating capacity (EDC) rather than its bulk electrical conductivity. These results indicate that the electron transfer mediated by the redox-active functional groups may prevail over the direct electron migration as the predominant mechanism to facilitate interspecies electron transfer in syntrophic communities for enhanced methanogenesis. Microbial community analysis suggests that biochar enriched Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium. Overall, this study shows that functional groups-mediated electron transfer contributes greatly to the improved methane production in WAS digester with biochar amendment.

Techno-economic and Life Cycle Analysis of MixAlco® Processes for Mixed Alcohol Production from Brown Algae

The need for producing renewable fuels from biomass has increased due to depleting fossil resources and environmental concerns. However, the low fraction of biomass carbon converted to product is an undeniable drawback for most current biofuel productions from fermentation due to undecomposed lignin in biomass composition and carbon loss as CO 2 . In this work, two main production routes of the MixAlco® process, the ketonization route (KR) and esterification route (ER) are evaluated for the mixed alcohol production by brown algae, a third-generation biomass without lignin. A novel fermentation process using syntrophic bacteria consortia (SBC) is developed to produce acetic acid from waste gas produced by KR and ER process. The paper investigates the integrated flowsheet for these alternative routes, using techno-economic and life cycle analysis to compare the minimum selling price and environmental impacts. From TEA, we find that the overall costs for KR and ER are lower than the SBC processes. The cost of ketonization routes is lower than esterification routes. The capital cost and operating cost for the ER+SBC process are the highest. Raw materials and utilities are the two major costs for all the processing routes examined. Here, the MSP for the ER+SBC process is the lowest out of all four routes. ER process performs the best in terms of environmental impacts except in water depletion compared with other processes, while the KR process performs the worst regarding the environmental metrics.

Incorporation of New Benzofulvene Derivatives Into Polymers to Give New NLO Materials

The need for fast electro-optic switches and modulators for optical communication, and laser frequency conversion has created a demand for new second-order non-linear optical materials. One approach to produce such materials is to align chromophores with large molecular hyperpolarizabilities in polymers. Recently fulvenes and benzofulvenes which contain electron donating groups have been shown to exhibit large second-order non-linear optical properties. The resonance structures shown below suggest that intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) should be favorable in omega - (hydroxyphenyl)benzofulvenes and even more favorable in omega-omega - (phenoxy)benzofulvenes because of the enhanced donor properties of the O group. This ICT should lead to enormously enhanced second-order hyperpolarizability. We have prepared all three new omega - (hydroxyphenyl)benzofulvenes by the condensation of indene with the appropriate hydroxyaryl aldehyde in MeOH or MeOH/H2O under base catalysis. In a similar fashion we have prepared substituted benzofulvenes with multipal donor groups. Preliminary studies show that some of our benzofulvene derivatives exhibit second order harmonic generation (SHG). Measurements were carried out by preparing host-guest polymers. The results of our work on benzofulvene derivatives in host-guest polymers when covalently bonded in the polymer will be described.
