Integration of CeO 2 -Based Memristor with Vertically Aligned Nanocomposite Thin Film: Enabling Selective Conductive Filament Formation for High-Performance Electronic Synapses

The CeO 2 -based memristor has attracted significant attention due to its intrinsic resistive switching (RS) properties, large on/off ratio, and great plasticity, making it a promising candidate for artificial synapses. However, significant challenges such as high power consumption and poor device reliability hinder its broad application in neuromorphic microchips. To tackle these issues, in this work, we design a novel bilayer (BL) memristor by integrating a CeO 2 -based memristor with a Co-CeO 2 vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) layer and compare it with the single layer (SL) memristor. Preliminary electrical testing reveals that the BL memristor offers a reduced set/reset voltage (~67% lower), a higher on/off ratio (~5 × 10 2 ), enhanced device reliability, and improved device-to-device variation compared to the SL memristor. Insight from COMSOL simulation, coupled with microstructural analysis, provides a comprehensive elucidation on how the VAN layer facilitates the selective conductive filament (CF) formation. Subsequently, the plasticity of the BL memristor is evaluated through long-term potentiation/depression (LTP/LTD), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), and spike-time-dependent plasticity (STDP). The spiking neural network (SNN) built upon the BL memristor achieves remarkable accuracy (~94%) after only 12 iterations, underscoring its potential for high-performance neural networks.

Effect of TiN coating on suppressing Ce-Fe interaction under irradiation

Advanced cladding is critical for fast reactors with the adequate thermal conductivity, mechanical stability and radiation tolerance of the cladding base material, corrosion resistance and high temperature coolant compatibility of the cladding surface, and chemical stability of the cladding inner wall against fuel cladding chemical interaction (FCCI). The preliminary results of recent ion irradiation studies of two diffusion-couple samples of cerium (Ce)/oxide-dispersion strengthened steel (ODS) and Ce/TiN/ODS, irradiated with 80 MeV xenon (Xe) ions to 100 displacements per atom (dpa) at 500°C, are summarized. Significant Ce-Fe interaction occurred in the Ce/ODS sample, and no noticeable Ce-Fe interaction was found in the Ce/TiN/ODS sample. It shows the effectiveness of 1-µm TiN diffusion barrier coated by the pulsed laser deposition on suppressing Ce-Fe interaction, a major contributor to FCCI in cladding. Here, density function theory (DFT) calculations of the impurity diffusivities of Ce and Fe within the Ti sublattice of TiN were performed to assist a mechanistic understanding of the experimental results.

Strong interfaces: the key to high strength in nano metallic laminates

Excellent mechanical properties of nanomaterials are usually attributed to their nanoscale feature size and high-density interfaces. This work explores the effects of intrinsic interface properties on mechanical properties of nano metallic laminates (NMLs). We show that the interface strength significantly affects the mechanical properties of NMLs. Via in situ mechanical testing and characterization, we investigate the deformation behavior and concurrent microstructure evolution in NMLs with four types of dissimilar interfaces. Our results show that the strength and deformation behaviors of NMLs are largely determined by interface strength. Strong interfaces can simultaneously increase the strength, work hardening capability, and deformability of NMLs. In conclusion, this work brings new insight into the design of advanced metallic materials through tuning of interface properties.

X-ray and molecular dynamics study of the temperature-dependent structure of molten NaF-Zr⁢F 4

The local atomic structure of NaF-Zr⁢F 4 (53–47 mol%) molten system and its evolution with temperature are examined with x-ray scattering measurements which are then used to validate the quality of ab initio and neural network-based molecular dynamics (NNMD) calculations in the temperature range 515–700°⁢C. The machine-learning enhanced NNMD calculations offer improved efficiency while maintaining accuracy at higher distances compared to ab initio calculations. Looking at the evolution of the pair distribution function with increasing temperature, a fundamental change in the liquid structure within the selected temperature range, accompanied by a slight decrease in overall correlation is revealed. NNMD calculations indicate the coexistence of three different fluorozirconate complexes: [Zr⁢F 6 ] 2– , [Zr⁢F 7 ] 3– , and [Zr⁢F 8 ] 4– , with a shift in the dominant coordination state from the 7-coordinated Zr cation toward a 6-coordinated cation with increasing temperature. The study also highlights the metastability of different local coordination structures, with frequent interconversions between the 6- and 7-coordinate states. Analysis of the Zr-F-Zr angular distribution function reveals the presence of both “edge-sharing” and “corner-sharing” fluorozirconate complexes with specific bond angles and distances in accord with previous studies, while the next-nearest-neighbor cation-cation correlations demonstrate a clear preference for unlike cations as nearest-neighbor pairs, emphasizing nonrandom arrangement. Finally, these findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the complex local structure of the molten salt, providing insights into temperature-dependent preferences and correlations within the molten system.

Exciton engineering of 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites by synergistically tuning the intra and interlayer structures

Designing two-dimensional halide perovskites for high-performance optoelectronic applications requires deep understanding of the structure-property relationship that governs their excitonic behaviors. However, a design framework that considers both intra and interlayer structures modified by the A-site and spacer cations, respectively, has not been developed. Here, we use pressure to synergistically tune the intra and interlayer structures and uncover the structural modulations that result in improved optoelectronic performance. Under applied pressure, (BA) 2 (GA)Pb 2 I 7 exhibits a 72-fold boost of photoluminescence and 10-fold increase of photoconductivity. Based on the observed structural change, we introduce a structural descriptor χ that describes both the intra and interlayer characteristics and establish a general quantitative relationship between χ and photoluminescence quantum yield: smaller χ correlates with minimized trapped excitons and more efficient emission from free excitons. Building on this principle, we design a perovskite (CMA) 2 (FA)Pb 2 I 7 that exhibits a small χ and an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 59.3%.
