SoS-SDQN: System of Systems Software-defined Quantum Networking

Quantum networks are needed for quantum domain applications that may run across different network deployments - point-to-point, multi-node networks, and possibly across inter-domain quantum networks, like the quantum internet. Unlike classical computing networks, quantum networks involve heterogeneous systems nodes that currently require local and manual control. This needs a unified control approach to help them integrate, work seamlessly, and have global knowledge. Software-defined Networking (SDN) has been successfully leveraged in classical networking for seamless and software-driven control of network infrastructure and packet switching, but not in management of quantum network applications across heterogeneous systems. In this paper, we review the current state of the art and present early developments of a System-of-Systems Software-defined Quantum Networking architecture (SoS-SDQN), a generic architecture that supports software-driven quantum network experiments across heterogeneous quantum systems. The architecture modifies the generic SDN to address the domain requirements of quantum networks and proposes a multilevel SDQN to provide a global view of network status, running applications, and control of incorporated heterogeneous quantum systems. We also design and implement a SoS SouthBound Quantum Interface (SoS-SBQI), a quantum infrastructure protocol that abstracts automation of applications across the network.

Real-time heralded resource-state generator for non-Gaussian teleportation

We experimentally demonstrate a heralded two-mode resource state (with fidelity F = 0.973 ± 0.005) capable of real-time use in quantum networking protocols, enabled by a newly developed photon-subtraction orchestrator system and a synchronized homodyne detection server.

Multi-Agent Control Planes for Quantum Networks: A Scalable Architecture for Autonomous Quantum Internet Management

Quantum networks are expected to enable distributed quantum computing, secure communication, and global entanglement distribution. However, operating such networks presents significant challenges, including stochastic quantum processes, fragile entanglement resources, dynamic topology, and cross-layer control requirements. Current quantum network control architectures largely rely on centralized or hierarchical controllers inspired by classical software-defined networking (SDN). While effective for small testbeds, these approaches face scalability, latency, and reliability limitations as quantum networks grow. This paper proposes a multi-agent control plane architecture for quantum networks. In this design, intelligent software agents operate at quantum nodes, repeaters, and orchestration layers, collectively managing entanglement generation, routing, purification, and scheduling. The distributed intelligence of the agent system allows the network to adapt dynamically to quantum hardware variability and environmental noise. We argue that multi-agent systems provide significant advantages over centralized control approaches, including scalability, resilience, local autonomy, and real-time adaptation. The paper discusses architectural design principles, agent coordination mechanisms, and research challenges in deploying multi-agent control planes for the emerging quantum Internet.

Spot-Checking for Reliable Quantum Communications

We demonstrate a spot-checking approach for real-time drift estimation and mitigation in continuously operating quantum links. Using polarization-entangled photon pairs, we achieve stable 16-hour operation, validating efficient, minimally invasive monitoring of quantum-network performance.

Device-independent Quantum Position Verification

We propose and implement a device-independent protocol for quantum position verification against unentangled adversaries. Our experiment achieves provable localization to a 1-dimensional region that is 40.7(7) % the size of the smallest theoretical region achievable with classical protocols.

Bell-State Bootstrapping via Spot-Checking

We present a spot-checking method to monitor and mitigate errors in imperfect entangled photon sources from semi-trusted third parties. We demonstrate that our method effectively mitigates polarization drifts and yields high-fidelity polarization-entangled Bell-state generation.
