Solid-state interphases design for high-safety, high-voltage and long-cyclability practical batteries via ethylene carbonate-free electrolytes

In this study, ethylene carbonate (EC) plays a crucial role in current electrolytes for batteries. However, EC reacts exothermically with the electrode to trigger thermal runaway and undergoes continuous oxidative decomposition at high voltages, hindering it application for next-generation batteries. Here we report a simple and effective strategy to design sulfolane(SL)-based electrolyte with reshaped anions-dominated solvation structure, forming highly stable inorganic-dominated electrode-electrolyte interphases that efficiently stabilize nickel-rich cathode and graphite anode. Compared with the conventional electrolyte, practical pouch-type LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 |Graphite cell with SL-based electrolyte significantly improve self-generated heat T 1 and thermal runaway triggering T 2 by 9.6 and 42.0 °C, respectively. More surprisingly, the pouch cell with SL-based electrolyte exhibits outstanding capacity retention of 88 % after 1000 cycles charged up to 4.5 V. The study brings new insights for unlocking advanced electrolyte candidates to build next-generation practical safer high-energy batteries.

Anomalous magnetothermoelectric behavior in massive Dirac materials

Extensive studies of electron transport in Dirac materials have shown positive magnetoresistance (MR) and positive magnetothermopower (MTP) in a magnetic field perpendicular to the excitation current or thermal gradient. In contrast, measurements of electron transport often show a negative longitudinal MR and negative MTP for a magnetic field oriented along the excitation current or thermal gradient; this is attributed to the chiral anomaly in Dirac materials. In this paper, we report a very different magnetothermoelectric transport behavior in the massive Dirac material ZrTe5. Although thin flakes show a commonly observed positive MR in a perpendicular magnetic field, distinct from other Dirac materials, we observe a sharp negative MTP. In a parallel magnetic field, we still observe a negative longitudinal MR, however, a remarkable positive MTP is observed for the fields parallel to the thermal gradients. Our theoretical calculations suggest that this anomalous magnetothermoelectric behavior can be attributed to the screened Coulomb scattering. This work demonstrates the significance of impurity scattering in the electron transport of topological materials and provides deep insight into the magnetotransport phenomena in Dirac materials.

A decreasing carbon allocation to belowground autotrophic respiration in global forest ecosystems

Belowground autotrophic respiration (RAsoil) depends on carbohydrates from photosynthesis flowing to roots and rhizospheres, and is one of the most important but least understood components in forest carbon cycling. Carbon allocation plays an important role in forest carbon cycling and reflects forest adaptation to changing environmental conditions. However, carbon allocation to RAsoil has not been fully examined at the global scale. To fill this knowledge gap, first, the spatio-temporal patterns of RAsoil from 1981 to 2017 were predicted by a Random Forest (RF) algorithm using the most updated Global Soil Respiration Database (v5) with global environmental variables; second, carbon allocation from photosynthesis to RAsoil (CAB), was calculated as the ratio of RAsoil to gross primary production; and its temporal and spatial patterns were assessed in global forest ecosystems. . Globally, mean RAsoil from forests was 8.9 ± 0.08 Pg C yr-1 (mean ± standard deviation) from 1981 to 2017 with strong spatial variabilities. Temporally, RAsoil increased at a rate of 0.0059 Pg C yr-2, paralleling broader soil respiration changes and indicating increasing carbon respired by roots. Mean CAB was 0.243 ± 0.016 and decreased over time. The temporal trend of CAB varied greatly in space, reflecting uneven responses of CAB to environmental changes. This study is the first attempt to predict global CAB and analyze its temporal and spatial patterns. With the linkage of carbon use efficiency, the developed CAB offers an completely independent approach to quantify global aboveground autotropic respiration spatially and temporally, which could provide crucial insights into carbon flux partition and global carbon cycling under climate change.
