Structural and functional validation of a highly specific Smurf2 inhibitor

Smurf1 and Smurf2 are two closely related member of the HECT (homologous to E6AP carboxy terminus) E3 ubiquitin ligase family and play important roles in the regulation of various cellular processes. Both were initially identified to regulate transforming growth factor‐β and bone morphogenetic protein signaling pathways through regulating Smad protein stability and are now implicated in various pathological processes. Generally, E3 ligases, of which over 800 exist in humans, are ideal targets for inhibition as they determine substrate specificity; however, there are few inhibitors with the ability to precisely target a particular E3 ligase of interest. In this work, we explored a panel of ubiquitin variants (UbVs) that were previously identified to bind Smurf1 or Smurf2. In vitro binding and ubiquitination assays identified a highly specific Smurf2 inhibitor, UbV S2.4, which was able to inhibit ligase activity with high potency in the low nanomolar range. Orthologous cellular assays further demonstrated high specificity of UbV S2.4 toward Smurf2 and no cross‐reactivity toward Smurf1. Structural analysis of UbV S2.4 in complex with Smurf2 revealed its mechanism of inhibition was through targeting the E2 binding site. In summary, we investigated several protein‐based inhibitors of Smurf1 and Smurf2 and identified a highly specific Smurf2 inhibitor that disrupts the E2–E3 protein interaction interface.

Coordination of thermostatically controlled loads

Apparatus and methods for a market-based control framework to coordinate a group of autonomous thermostatically controlled loads (TCL) to achieve system-level objectives with pricing incentives is disclosed. In one example of the disclosed technology, a method of providing power to a load via a power grid by submitting bids to a coordinator includes determining an energy response relating price data for one or more energy prices to quantity data for power to be consumed by the load, sending a bid for power for a finite time period based on the energy response to the coordinator, and receiving a clearing price based on: the bid, on bids received from a plurality of additional loads, and a feeder power constraint. In some examples, the energy response is based at least in part on an equivalent thermal parameter model and a control policy indicating one or more power states for the load.

Unidirectional microwave transduction with chirality selected short-wavelength magnon excitations

Nonreciprocal magnon propagation has recently become a highly potential approach of developing chip-embedded microwave isolators for advanced information processing. However, it is challenging to achieve large nonreciprocity in miniaturized magnetic thin-film devices because of the difficulty of distinguishing propagating surface spin waves along the opposite directions when the film thickness is small. In this work, we experimentally realize unidirectional microwave transduction with sub-micrometer-wavelength propagating magnons in a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin-film delay line. We achieve a non-decaying isolation of 30 dB with a broad field-tunable bandpass frequency range up to 14 GHz. The large isolation is due to the selection of chiral magnetostatic surface spin waves with the Oersted field generated from the coplanar waveguide antenna. Increasing the geometry ratio between the antenna width and YIG thickness drastically reduces the nonreciprocity and introduces additional magnon transmission bands. Furthermore, our results pave the way for on-chip microwave isolation and tunable delay line with short-wavelength magnonic excitations.

Selective scandium ion capture through coordination templating in a covalent organic framework

The use of coordination complexes within covalent organic frameworks can significantly diversify the structures and properties of this class of materials. In this report we combined coordination chemistry and reticular chemistry by preparing frameworks that consist of a ditopic (p-phenylenediamine) and mixed tritopic moieties-an organic ligand and a scandium coordination complex of similar sizes and geometries, both bearing terminal phenylamine groups. Changing the ratio of organic ligand to scandium complex enabled the preparation of a series of crystalline covalent organic frameworks with tunable levels of scandium incorporation. Removal of scandium from the material with the highest metal content subsequently resulted in a 'metal-imprinted' covalent organic framework that exhibits a high affinity and capacity for Sc 3+ ions in acidic environments and in the presence of competing metal ions. In particular, the selectivity of this framework for Sc 3+ over common impurity ions such as La 3+ and Fe 3+ surpasses that of existing scandium adsorbents.

An organic electrochemical transistor for multi-modal sensing, memory and processing

By integrating sensing, memory and processing functionalities, biological nervous systems are energy and area efficient. Emulating such capabilities in artificial systems is, however, challenging and is limited by the device heterogeneity of sensing and processing cores. Here we report an organic electrochemical transistor capable of sensing, memory and processing. The device has a vertical traverse architecture and a crystalline–amorphous channel that can be selectively doped by ions to enable two reconfigurable modes: a volatile receptor and a non-volatile synapse. As a volatile receptor, the device is capable of multi-modal sensing and is responsive to stimuli such as ions and light. As a non-volatile synapse, it is capable of 10-bit analogue states, low switching stochasticity and good state retention. We also show that the homogeneous integration of the devices could provide functions such as conditioned reflexes and could be used for real-time cardiac disease diagnoses via reservoir computing.

Spiroborate-Linked Ionic Covalent Adaptable Networks with Rapid Reprocessability and Closed-Loop Recyclability

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) represent a novel class of polymeric materials crosslinked by dynamic covalent bonds. Since their first discovery, CANs have attracted great attention due to their high mechanical strength and stability like conventional thermosets under service conditions and easy reprocessability like thermoplastics under certain external stimuli. Here, we report the first example of ionic covalent adaptable networks (ICANs), a type of crosslinked ionomers, consisting of negatively charged backbone structures. More specifically, two ICANs with different backbone compositions were prepared through spiroborate chemistry. Given the dynamic nature of the spiroborate linkages, the resulting ionomer thermosets display rapid reprocessability and closed-loop recyclability under mild conditions. The materials mechanically broken into smaller pieces can be reprocessed into coherent solids at 120 °C within only 1 min with nearly 100% recovery of the mechanical properties. Upon treating the ICANs with dilute hydrochloric acid at room temperature, the valuable monomers can be easily chemically recycled in almost quantitative yield. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the great potential of spiroborate bonds as a novel dynamic ionic linkage for development of new reprocessable and recyclable ionomer thermosets.

Hybrid magnonics in hybrid perovskite antiferromagnets

Abstract Hybrid magnonic systems are a newcomer for pursuing coherent information processing owing to their rich quantum engineering functionalities. One prototypical example is hybrid magnonics in antiferromagnets with an easy-plane anisotropy that resembles a quantum-mechanically mixed two-level spin system through the coupling of acoustic and optical magnons. Generally, the coupling between these orthogonal modes is forbidden due to their opposite parity. Here we show that the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya-Interaction (DMI), a chiral antisymmetric interaction that occurs in magnetic systems with low symmetry, can lift this restriction. We report that layered hybrid perovskite antiferromagnets with an interlayer DMI can lead to a strong intrinsic magnon-magnon coupling strength up to 0.24 GHz, which is four times greater than the dissipation rates of the acoustic/optical modes. Our work shows that the DMI in these hybrid antiferromagnets holds promise for leveraging magnon-magnon coupling by harnessing symmetry breaking in a highly tunable, solution-processable layered magnetic platform.

Precursor-mediated in situ growth of hierarchical N-doped graphene nanofibers confining nickel single atoms for CO 2 electroreduction

Despite the various strategies for achieving metal–nitrogen–carbon (M–N–C) single-atom catalysts (SACs) with different microenvironments for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), the synthesis–structure–performance correlation remains elusive due to the lack of well-controlled synthetic approaches. Here, we employed Ni nanoparticles as starting materials for the direct synthesis of nickel (Ni) SACs in one spot through harvesting the interaction between metallic Ni and N atoms in the precursor during the chemical vapor deposition growth of hierarchical N-doped graphene fibers. By combining with first-principle calculations, we found that the Ni-N configuration is closely correlated to the N contents in the precursor, in which the acetonitrile with a high N/C ratio favors the formation of Ni-N 3 , while the pyridine with a low N/C ratio is more likely to promote the evolution of Ni-N 2 . Moreover, we revealed that the presence of N favors the formation of H-terminated edge of sp 2 carbon and consequently leads to the formation of graphene fibers consisting of vertically stacked graphene flakes, instead of the traditional growth of carbon nanotubes on Ni nanoparticles. With a high capability in balancing the *COOH formation and *CO desorption, the as-prepared hierarchical N-doped graphene nanofibers with Ni-N 3 sites exhibit a superior CO2RR performance compared to that with Ni-N 2 and Ni-N 4 ones.

Layer-by-Layer-Processed Organic Solar Cells with 18.02% Efficiency Enabled by Regulating the Aggregation of Bottom Polymers

The fabrication of organic solar cells (OSCs) by a layer-by-layer (LBL) method has attracted growing attention in recent years. As already known, the pre-aggregates of conjugated polymers in solution have a profound impact on their microstructure morphology in films. Herein, by simply controlling the solution temperature and annealing processes, the pre-aggregation behavior of D18 polymer in solution can be fine-tuned and the microstructure of D18 bottom layer is well manipulated. The optimized D18 bottom layer can effectively regulate L8-BO upper-layer-forming suitable networks for efficient charge transportation. In addition, a vertical phase separation with a special D/D:A/A structure (P-i-N-type component distribution) is also formed. As a result, compared to the 16.43% power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the bulk heterojunction devices, such control enables bilayer OSC devices based on the polymer D18 and L8-BO to deliver an enhanced PCE of 18.02% with simultaneously improved short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, and fill factor. Importantly, it is also demonstrated in these results that the LBL deposition process utilizing the pre-aggregation of polymer and its fiber-network-forming ability is a very promising approach to improve charge dynamics, suppress carrier recombination, and fabricate highly efficient OSCs.

Ocular biological parameters and prevalence of myopia in vocational high school and general high school in China

Significance Higher prevalence of myopia is possibly associated with more extended schooling schedules. Therefore, adjustments to high school curricula may aid in reducing the prevalence of myopia among adolescents. Purpose To investigate the prevalence of myopia among 15- to 18-year-old adolescents in Tianjin, China, and to evaluate the impact of different educational schedules on the prevalence of myopia among high school students. Methods This is a school-based epidemiological study with a cross-sectional design. Ocular biological parameters and noncycloplegic photorefraction were examined using optical biometry devices and photoscreener devices. Each student’s spherical equivalent (SE) and ocular biometry were recorded, and the prevalence of myopia was calculated. Results A total of 2,867 participants (1,519 males and 1,348 females) were tested for non-cycloplegic refraction, axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and lens thickness (LT). In this research, the overall prevalence of myopia was 81.6%, with high myopia accounting for 11.8%. Myopia prevalence was substantially higher in general high schools than in vocational high schools, with 86.1 and 70.1%, respectively. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of myopia ( p = 0.744) or high myopia ( p = 0.851) across the three vocational school years. In the general high school, however, there was an increase of 4.6% ( p < 0.05) in myopia prevalence between year 10 and year12. Conclusion Comparing vocational and standard high school students, there are considerable disparities in prevalence of myopia, spherical equivalent, and ocular biological parameters. The prevalence of myopia and high myopia increased among standard high school students, but remained relatively consistent among students in vocational schools.

Rational design of septenary high-entropy alloy for direct ethanol fuel cells

Promoting C–C bond cleavage of ethanol by a complete 12-electron (12e) ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is a grand challenge for the development of highly efficient direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). Most state-of-the-art catalysts only implement the EOR in an incomplete 4e or 2e pathway because of the poisoning of the catalysts by strongly adsorbed CO, leading to the poor output performance and low cell efficiency of DEFCs. Herein, a septenary PtPdFeCoNiSnMn high-entropy alloy (PtPd HEA) with a PtPd-rich surface but super-low platinum group metals loading was developed. We identified and proved the functions of each element in the PtPd HEA. The DEFCs assembled with the PtPd HEA (0.12 mg PtPd ∙cm -2 ) achieved a maximum power density of 0.72 W cm -2 and a durable operation for 1,200 h, which outperforms state-of-the-art catalysts for DEFCs. This work will be a design principle for nanostructured alloy development for renewable energy and sustainability applications.

Interface synergism and engineering of Pd/Co@N-C for direct ethanol fuel cells

Direct ethanol fuel cells have been widely investigated as nontoxic and low-corrosive energy conversion devices with high energy and power densities. It is still challenging to develop high-activity and durable catalysts for a complete ethanol oxidation reaction on the anode and accelerated oxygen reduction reaction on the cathode. The materials’ physics and chemistry at the catalytic interface play a vital role in determining the overall performance of the catalysts. Herein, we propose a Pd/Co@N-C catalyst that can be used as a model system to study the synergism and engineering at the solid-solid interface. Particularly, the transformation of amorphous carbon to highly graphitic carbon promoted by cobalt nanoparticles helps achieve the spatial confinement effect, which prevents structural degradation of the catalysts. The strong catalyst-support and electronic effects at the interface between palladium and Co@N-C endow the electron-deficient state of palladium, which enhances the electron transfer and improved activity/durability. The Pd/Co@N-C delivers a maximum power density of 438 mW cm -2 in direct ethanol fuel cells and can be operated stably for more than 1000 hours. This work presents a strategy for the ingenious catalyst structural design that will promote the development of fuel cells and other sustainable energy-related technologies.

Low-temperature upcycling of polyolefins into liquid alkanes via tandem cracking-alkylation

Selective upcycling of polyolefin waste has been hampered by the relatively high temperatures that are required to cleave the carbon-carbon (C–C) bonds at reasonably high rates. We present a distinctive approach that uses a highly ionic reaction environment to increase the polymer reactivity and lower the energy of ionic transition states. Combining endothermic cleavage of the polymer C–C bonds with exothermic alkylation reactions of the cracking products enables full conversion of polyethylene and polypropylene to liquid isoalkanes (C 6 to C 10 ) at temperatures below 100°C. Both reactions are catalyzed by a Lewis acidic species that is generated in a chloroaluminate ionic liquid. The alkylate product forms a separate phase and is easily separated from the reactant catalyst mixture. The process can convert unprocessed postconsumer items to high-quality liquid alkanes with high yields.

Shape-persistent phthalocyanine cages

Phthalocyanine (Pc), an electro-redox active moiety, has many attractive properties stemming from its large aromatic system and ability to act as a catalyst in electrochemical reactions, such as the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). However, due to the synthetic challenge related to geometric requirements and poor solubility (strong aggregation), discrete shape-persistent cages consisting of site-isolated, readily accessible Pc moieties have not been available. Here, we report the synthesis of Zn- and Ni-metallated Pc-based molecular cages via one-step dynamic spiroborate linkage formation in high yields. The ZnPc cage structure is unambiguously elucidated at the atomic level by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Moreover, owing to the site-isolated redox-active metal centers, readily accessible intrinsic cavity, and shape-persistent backbone, the Ni-metallated Pc (NiPc) cage exhibits high catalytic efficiency, selectivity, and stability, superior to the non-caged control molecules in electrocatalytic CO 2 RR.

Tuning Structural and Electronic Configuration of FeN 4 via External S for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The Fe–N–C material represents an attractive oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst, and the FeN 4 moiety has been identified as a very competitive catalytic active site. Fine tuning of the coordination structure of FeN 4 has an essential impact on the catalytic performance. Herein, we construct a sulfur‐modified Fe–N–C catalyst with controllable local coordination environment, where the Fe is coordinated with four in‐plane N and an axial external S. The external S atom affects not only the electron distribution but also the spin state of Fe in the FeN 4 active site. The appearance of higher valence states and spin states for Fe demonstrates the increase in unpaired electrons. With the above characteristics, the adsorption and desorption of the reactants at FeN 4 active sites are optimized, thus promoting the oxygen reduction reaction activity. This work explores the key point in electronic configuration and coordination environment tuning of FeN 4 through S doping and provides new insight into the construction of M–N–C‐based oxygen reduction reaction catalysts.

A New Perspective of Post-Weld Baking Effect on Al-Steel Resistance Spot Weld Properties through Machine Learning and Finite Element Modeling

The root cause of post-weld baking on the mechanical performance of Al-steel dissimilar resistance spot welds (RSWs) has been determined by machine learning (ML) and finite element modeling (FEM) in this study. A deep neural network (DNN) model was constructed to associate the spot weld performance with the joint attributes, stacking materials, and other conditions, using a comprehensive experimental dataset. The DNN model positively identified that the post-weld baking reduces the joint performance, and the extent of degradation depends on the thickness of stacking materials. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model was then used to investigate the root cause and the mechanism of the baking effect. It revealed that the formation of high thermal stresses during baking, from the mismatch of thermal expansion between steel and Al alloy, causes damage and cracking of the brittle intermetallic compound (IMC) formed at the interface of the weld nugget during welding. This in turn reduces the joint performance by promoting undesirable interfacial fracture when the welds were subjected to externally applied loads. The FEM model further revealed that increase in structural stiffness, because of increase in steel sheet thickness, reduces the thermal stresses at the interface caused by the thermal expansion mismatch and consequently lessens the detrimental effect of post-weld baking on the joint performance.

Importance of interface open circuit potential on aqueous hydrogenolytic reduction of benzyl alcohol over Pd/C

Abstract The open circuit potential (OCP) established by the quasi-equilibrated electrode reaction of H 2 and H 3 O + (hydr.) , complicates catalytic reactions significantly. The hydrogenolysis rate of benzylic alcohol on Pd/C increases 2-3 orders of magnitude with the pH decreasing from 7 to 0.6. The reaction follows a pathway of protonated benzyl alcohol dehydration to a benzylic carbenium ion, followed by a hydride addition to form toluene. The dehydration of protonated benzyl alcohol is kinetic relevent, thus, being enhanced at lower pH. The OCP stabilizes all cationic species in the elementary steps. Particularly, the initial state (benzyl alcohol oxonium ion) is less stabilized than the dehydration transition state and the product (benzylic carbenium), thus, lowering the free energy barrier of the rate-determining step. In accordance, the rate increased with increasingly negative OCP. Beside OCP, an external negative electric potential in an electrocatlaytic system was also demonstrated to enhance the rate in the same way.
