Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) is a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) widely used in food, paint, textiles, and household products, such as absorbent hygiene products. Specifically, disposable diaper waste comprises a large majority of hygiene waste, in which 80% is landfilled and 20% is incinerated. This proposal describes new methods to valorize PAA to mitigate pollution and risk of large-scale release, dispersion, and accumulation of PAA into aquatic and terrestrial environments. The first strategy builds upon photoredox catalysis to oxidize PAA, which will allow for subsequent cleavage to PAA into valuable chemical feedstocks with intriguing functional groups that can readily undergo further transformations. Moreover, in conjunction with RAFT polymerization, photoredox catalysis would also lead to preparation of new graft block polymers to serve as pH-sensitive drug delivery vehicles. The second strategy invokes electrocatalysis, which can access different intermediates compared to photoredox catalysis. This method would lead to refunctionalization and repurpose of PAA into hydrogels and zwitterionic polymers that can find utilities in ion exchange, water treatment, soil conditioning, paper reinforcement, pigment retention, shampoo formulation, and drug delivery.
Enhancing the kinetics of lattice oxygen redox (LOR) in P2-type layered sodium oxide cathodes is crucial for the advancement of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with superior energy and power densities. Electronic structure regulation stands out as a highly effective approach to address the inherent limitations of P2-type layered oxides with LOR, including sluggish kinetics, phase transitions, voltage hysteresis, and local structural distortion. In this work, a strategy involving the introduction of CoO 6 octahedra with π-interaction into Na 0.6 Li 0.1 Fe 0.3–x Co x Mn 0.6 O 2 (x = 0, 0.15, 0.3) cathodes to facilitate Na-ion transport is proposed. Furthermore, the impact of FeO 6 octahedra with σ-interaction in P2-type cathodes on electrochemical performance is comprehensively investigated. Through multimodal in-situ and ex-situ characterization techniques, it is revealed that Co–O with π-interaction effectively mitigates P2-OP4 phase transitions by strengthening Na–O, reduces voltage hysteresis, and stabilizes the local structure. Consequently, Na 0.6 Li 0.1 Co 0.3 Mn 0.6 O 2 demonstrates enhanced Na-ion diffusion kinetics, leading to improved rate performance and a reversible capacity of 55 mAh g –1 at 10 C, significantly outperforming cathodes with Fe–O σ-interaction. Moreover, when coupled with hard carbon, the full cell achieves a remarkable energy density of 395 Wh kg –1 (on cathode) at 0.1 C, with a capacity retention of 75% over 100 cycles at 1 C.

We present a direct lattice QCD calculation of the x-dependence of the pion distribution amplitude (DA), which is performed using the quasi-DA in large momentum effective theory on a domain-wall fermion ensemble at physical quark masses and spacing a ≈ 0.084 fm. The bare quais-DA matrix elements are renormalized in the hybrid scheme and matched to $\overline{MS}$ with a subtraction of the leading renormalon in the Wilson-line mass. For the first time, we include threshold resummation in the perturbative matching onto the light-cone DA, which resums the large logarithms in the soft gluon limit at next-to-next-to-leading log. The resummed results show controlled scale-variation uncertainty within the range of momentum fraction x ϵ [0.25, 0.75] at the largest pion momentum P z ≈ 1.85 GeV. In addition, we apply the same analysis to quasi-DAs from a highly-improved-staggered-quark ensemble at physical pion mass and a = 0.076 fm. By comparison we find with 2σ confidence level that the DA obtained from chiral fermions is flatter and lower near x = 0.5.
