HHH whitepaper

Abstract We here report on the progress of the HHH Workshop, that took place in Dubrovnik in July 2023. After the discovery of a particle that complies with the properties of the Higgs boson of the Standard Model, all Standard Model (SM) parameters are in principle determined. However, in order to verify or falsify the model, the full form of the potential has to be determined. This includes the measurement of the triple and quartic scalar couplings. We here report on ongoing progress of measurements for multi-scalar final states, with an emphasis on three SM-like scalar bosons at 125$$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ Ge V , but also mentioning other options. We discuss both experimental progress and challenges as well as theoretical studies and models that can enhance such rates with respect to the SM predictions.

QCD Predictions for Meson Electromagnetic Form Factors at High Momenta: Testing Factorization in Exclusive Processes

We report the first lattice QCD computation of pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors, 𝐹 𝑀⁡ (𝑄 2 ), at large momentum transfer up to 10 and 28 GeV 2 , respectively. Utilizing physical masses and two fine lattices, we achieve good agreement with JLab experimental results at 𝑄 2 ≲ 4 GeV 2 . For 𝑄 2 ≳ 4 GeV 2 , our results provide ab initio QCD benchmarks for the forthcoming experiments at JLab 12 GeV and future electron-ion colliders. We also test the QCD collinear factorization framework utilizing our high-𝑄 2 form factors at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbation theory, which relates the form factors to the leading Fock-state meson distribution amplitudes. Comparisons with independent lattice QCD calculations using the same framework demonstrate, within estimated uncertainties, the universality of these nonperturbative quantities.

The role of annealing and grain boundary controls on the mechanical properties of limestones and marbles

Chemical and mechanical processes are coupled in many geological and geochemical environments. Reactive processes anneal defects and restructure grain boundaries, modifying their elastic properties, levels of internal friction, wave propagation rates and fracture behaviors. The nature of these changes is, however, contingent on the initial state of the rock. Here, in this study, impulse excitation was used to measure changes in mechanical properties as a function of dry and steam heating time at 300 °C for three carbonate rocks: Carrara marble, Carthage marble (Burlington Limestone), and Texas Cream limestone (Edwards limestone), with initial porosities of about 1 %, 3 %, and 27 %, respectively. Frequency-dependent phenomena along with mineral recrystallization were observed. This was coupled with small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering analysis to determine the relationship between changes in bulk mechanical and microstructural properties. An observed decrease in both the Young's and shear moduli in the experimental limestones as a function of heating time reflects and quantifies a reduction in the stiffness of the rock due to annealing. The internal friction of the samples first increases then decreases with reaction time, reflecting defect annealing, but this was balanced against grain boundary dissolution apparently driven by condensation of steam in the confined grain-boundary environment. This suggests an increase in the boiling point under confinement leading to dissolution, increased porosity and widening of the grain boundaries. In addition, comparison of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering results suggests that it is inappropriate to assume that pores are empty for quantitative analysis of typical small-angle scattering samples.
