Lewis Acid‐Activated Charge Trapping in Dielectric Polymers for Superior High‐Temperature Electrostatic Energy Storage

Dielectric polymer capacitors are essential for electrostatic energy storage but suffer from charge transport-induced energy losses, particularly at elevated temperatures where thermally activated charge carriers exacerbate conduction. Conventional mitigation strategies rely on introducing heterogeneous interfaces to create charge traps, complicating scalable film fabrication. A homogeneous molecular trapping mechanism would circumvent these complexities, yet remains underexplored. Herein, a charge trapping strategy is devised by modifying the lowest occupied molecular orbitals of dielectric polymers through Lewis acid-base adduct formation. The use of tris(pentafluorophenyl)boron (BCF) as a Lewis acidic molecular additive introduces deeper charge traps in commercial polyetherimide (PEI) while retaining homogeneity. With only 0.5 wt.% loading, the PEI-BCF film exhibits greatly improved breakdown strength, achieving an ultrahigh discharged energy density of 7.3 J cm-3 with excellent cycle stability at 200 °C. This work establishes a facile molecular approach to decoupling charge trapping from heterogeneous interfaces, enabling high-energy-density polymer capacitors operable under extreme thermal conditions.

Ambient mechanosynthesis of flexible two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks

We present the first ambient mechanosynthesis of 16 flexible covalent organic frameworks (COFs) within an hour. Notably, one representative COF exhibited a high iodine uptake capacity of ∼4.3 g g −1 from aqueous solutions and 5.97 g g −1 from vapor. Flexible two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) constructed from nonplanar building blocks represent an emerging paradigm in COF design. Nevertheless, the prevailing solvothermal synthesis suffers from low time efficiency, environmental unfriendliness, and cumbersome protocols. Here, we address these challenges by developing the first ambient mechanosynthesis of a diverse library of flexible 2D COFs. Sixteen distinct triazine-cored Schiff-base COFs, including five as-yet-unreported ones, were rapidly synthesized via ball milling using 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT-NH 2 ) and 2,4,6-tris(4-formylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT-CHO) as building blocks. Notably, the representative COF, MC-flexible-COF-1, was synthesized in as little as one hour under mechanosynthesis conditions, whereas it remained unattainable via the traditional solvothermal method, despite prolonged heating and extensive solvent screening. The highly dynamic nature of the imine linkage was unequivocally demonstrated through mechanochemical “scrambling” experiments using molecular model compounds. Furthermore, MC-flexible-COF-1 exhibited a high iodine uptake capacity of ∼4.30 g g −1 from aqueous solutions and 5.97 g g −1 from the vapor phase. This work underscores the immense potential of mechanochemistry as a powerful and sustainable tool for the rapid synthesis of advanced 2D COFs, including those inaccessible via conventional solution-based methods.

Manipulating Aromaticity to Redirect Topochemical Polymerization Pathways

Topochemical polymerization (TCP) represents an essential route to create regio- and stereoregular polymers through solid-state transformations. Herein, we present an innovative strategy for controlling topochemical polymerization pathways by tailoring the terminal group aromaticity in the para-azaquinodimethane (AQM) ring system. Substituting phenyl groups with less aromatic furyl units extends significant spin density delocalization across the conjugated core upon thermal activation, inducing significant diradicaloid characters at furyl positions and enabling unconventional reactivities in both solution and solid states. Thermal treatment in toluene yields a unique cyclophane dimer formed via furyl-methine C-C coupling, confirmed by X-ray crystallography, while solid-state reactions produce polymers formed via both intercolumnar furyl-methine coupling and intracolumnar methine-methine coupling. The spin-center-directed mechanism underlying these transformations is validated through theoretical modeling and isotopic labeling experiments. This study highlights the prowess of aromaticity modulation in functional pro-aromatic systems, which enables the synthesis of polymers with main chain structures that are otherwise difficult to access.

A Rapid, Sustainable, One‐step Mechanochemical Strategy for Synthesizing Gold Nanoparticle‐Doped Covalent Organic Frameworks

Doping gold nanoparticles within covalent organic frameworks (AuNPs@COFs) has garnered enormous momentum due to their unique properties and broad applications. Nevertheless, prevailing multi-step synthesis is plagued with low time efficiency, eco-unfriendliness, and tedious protocols. Herein, we introduce a rapid, sustainable, scalable, one-step mechanochemical strategy for synthesizing up to four AuNPs-doped COFs via steel ball milling within an hour under ambient conditions. This approach overcomes the synthetic barriers of conventional multi-step solution-based methods, such as extended reaction times (5 days), milligram scale, the use of toxic solvents, elevated temperatures, and reliance on external reducing agents. One exemplary AuNPs@COF (AuNPs@DMTP-TPB) exhibits high crystallinity, porosity, small AuNP size, and uniform dispersion (5.4±0.6 nm), surpassing its counterpart synthesized via multi-step solution-based methods (6.4±1.1 nm). Notably, the gram-scale synthesis of AuNPs@DMTP-TPB can be successfully achieved. Control experiments suggest that the in situ formation of AuNPs is attributed to the galvanic reduction of gold precursor by stainless steel apparatus. As a proof-of-concept catalytic application, AuNPs@DMTP-TPB demonstrates remarkable catalytic activity and recyclability for the aqueous reduction of 4-nitrophenol under ambient conditions. This study provides an environmentally benign and fast pathway to synthesize AuNPs@COFs via mechanochemistry for the first time, opening tremendous possibilities for heterogeneous catalysis and beyond.
