Electrical Control and Transport of Tightly Bound Interlayer Excitons in a MoSe 2 /hBN/MoSe 2 Heterostructure

Controlling interlayer excitons in Van der Waals heterostructures holds promise for exploring Bose-Einstein condensates and developing novel optoelectronic applications, such as excitonic integrated circuits. Despite intensive studies, several key fundamental properties of interlayer excitons, such as their binding energies and interactions with charges, remain not well understood. Here we report the formation of momentum-direct interlayer excitons in a high-quality MoSe 2 /hBN/MoSe 2 heterostructure under an electric field, characterized by bright photoluminescence (PL) emission with high quantum yield and a narrow linewidth of less than 4 meV. These interlayer excitons show electrically tunable emission energy spanning ~1⁢8⁢0 meV through the Stark effect, and exhibit a sizable binding energy of ~8⁢1 meV in the intrinsic regime, along with trion binding energies of a few millielectronvolts. Remarkably, we demonstrate the long-range transport of interlayer excitons with a characteristic diffusion length exceeding 1⁢0 μ⁢m, which can be attributed, in part, to their dipolar repulsive interactions. Further, spatially and polarization-resolved spectroscopic studies reveal rich exciton physics in the system, such as valley polarization, local trapping, and the possible existence of dark interlayer excitons. Furthermore, the formation and transport of tightly bound interlayer excitons with narrow linewidth, coupled with the ability to electrically manipulate their properties, open exciting new avenues for exploring quantum many-body physics, including excitonic condensate and superfluidity, and for developing novel optoelectronic devices, such as exciton and photon routers.

Giant optical nonlinearity of Fermi polarons in atomically thin semiconductors

In this study, realizing strong nonlinear optical responses is a long-standing goal of both fundamental and technological importance. Recently, substantial efforts have been focused on exploring excitons in solids to achieve nonlinearities even down to few-photon levels. However, a crucial tradeoff arises as strong light–matter interactions require large oscillator strength and short radiative lifetime of excitons, which limits their nonlinearity. Here we experimentally demonstrate strong nonlinear optical responses with large oscillator strength by exploiting the coupling between excitons and carriers in an atomically thin semiconductor. By controlling the electric field and electrostatic doping of trilayer WSe 2 , we observe the hybridization between intralayer and interlayer excitons and the formation of Fermi polarons. Substantial optical nonlinearity is observed under continuous-wave and pulsed laser excitation, where the Fermi polaron resonance blueshifts by as much as ~10 meV. Intriguingly, we observe a remarkable asymmetry in the optical nonlinearity between electron and hole doping, which is tunable by the applied electric field. We attribute these features to the optically induced valley polarization due to the interactions between excitons and free charges. Our results establish atomically thin heterostructures as a highly versatile platform for engineering nonlinear optical response with applications to classical and quantum optoelectronics.

A Pseudo Planar Heterojunction Structure for Eco‐Friendly Printable Organic Solar Cells Achieving 19.05% Efficiency

Abstract Obtaining a well‐accurate vertical distribution active layer morphology through the air‐printing process is an essential task for achieving efficient scalable large‐area organic solar cells (OSCs). In this target, the desired and controllable pseudo planar heterojunction (PPHJ) active layer structure with suitable phase separation is developed by pre‐deposited D18‐Cl layer under the PM6:BTP‐eC9 film via an eco‐friendly manufacturing method. The addition of the D18‐Cl regulates molecular crystallization and leads to an ideal vertical stratification while simultaneously suppressing voltage loss, optimizing energetic disorder, and carrier management. Impressively, the optimal PPHJ devices perform superior power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 19.05% (100 nm), 17.33% (300 nm), and 14.14% (4 cm 2 ) compared to the BHJ devices. Importantly, the PPHJ OSCs also exhibit an impressive extrapolated T 80 (the time required to reach 80% of initial PCE) of long‐time storage and operational stability, as well as thermal stability.

Controlling quantum phases of electrons and excitons in moiré superlattices

Moiré lattices formed in twisted and lattice-mismatched van der Waals heterostructures have emerged as a platform to engineer the novel electronic and excitonic states at the nanoscale. This Perspective reviews the materials science of moiré heterostructures with a focus on the structural properties of the interface and its structural–property relationships. We first review the studies of the atomic relaxation and domain structures in moiré superlattices and how these structural studies provide critical insights into understanding the behaviors of quantum-confined electrons and excitons. We discuss the general frameworks to manipulate moiré structures and how such control can be harnessed for engineering new phases of matter and simulating various quantum phenomena. Lastly, we discuss routes toward large-scale moiré heterostructures and give an outlook on their applications in quantum electronics and optoelectronics. Special emphasis will be placed on the challenges and opportunities of the reliable fabrication and dynamical manipulation of moiré heterostructures.

Enabling Conversion-Type Iron Fluoride Cathode by Halide-Based Solid Electrolyte

The practical application of low-cost and energy-dense iron fluoride cathodes has been hindered by the first cycle electrochemical irreversibility, cycling instability, and large voltage hysteresis. Here, we report that these challenges may be overcome by the utilization of halide-based solid electrolytes (SEs). The excellent electrochemical stability of halide-based SEs enables a complete conversion and deconversion of FeF 2 which cannot be achieved with sulfide-based SEs. Due to restricted and reversible decomposition of SE, prevention of Fe dissolution, mechanical confinement of active material, as well as improved electrode kinetics, solid-state FeF 2 cathode with halide-based SE demonstrated superior electrochemical performance compared with FeF 2 electrodes in liquid electrolytes, with a high 1st cycle coulombic efficiency (~100 %), high specific capacity (~600 mAh/g), long cycle life (>100 cycles) and high-rate performance (up to 2C). In conclusion, our results suggest solidifying the batteries may be a viable approach to addressing the long-standing key challenges of iron fluoride cathodes.

Automated detection of mild cognitive impairment and dementia from voice recordings: A natural language processing approach

Automated computational assessment of neuropsychological tests would enable widespread, cost-effective screening for dementia. A novel natural language processing approach is developed and validated to identify different stages of dementia based on automated transcription of digital voice recordings of subjects’ neuropsychological tests conducted by the Framingham Heart Study (n = 1084). Transcribed sentences from the test were encoded into quantitative data and several models were trained and tested using these data and the participants’ demographic characteristics. Average area under the curve (AUC) on the held-out test data reached 92.6%, 88.0%, and 74.4% for differentiating Normal cognition from Dementia, Normal or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) from Dementia, and Normal from MCI, respectively. The proposed approach offers a fully automated identification of MCI and dementia based on a recorded neuropsychological test, providing an opportunity to develop a remote screening tool that could be adapted easily to any language.
