AI-Enabled Robotic NDE for Structural Damage Assessment and Repair

The aim of this paper is to develop the concept and a prototype of an intelligent mobile robotic platform that is integrated with nondestructive evaluation (NDE) capabilities for autonomous live inspection and repair. In many industrial environments, such as the application of power plant boiler inspection, human inspectors often have to perform hazardous and challenging tasks. There is a significant chance of injury, considering the confined spaces and limited visibility of the inspection environment and hazards such as pressurization and improper water levels. In order to provide a solution to eliminate these dangers, the concept of a new robotic system was developed and prototyped that is capable of autonomously sweeping the region to be inspected. The robot design contains systematic integration of components from robotics, NDE, and artificial intelligence (AI). A magnetic track system is used to navigate over the vertical steel structures required for examination. While moving across the inspection area, the robot uses an NDE sensor to acquire data for inspection and repair. This paper presents a design of a portable NDE scanning system based on eddy current array probes, which can be customized and installed on various mobile robot platforms. Machine learning methods are applied for semantic segmentation that will simultaneously localize and recognize defects without the need of human intervention. Experiments were conducted that show the NDE and repair capabilities of the system. Improvements in human safety and structural damage prevention, as well as lowering the overall costs of maintenance, are possible through the implementation of this robotic NDE system.

Magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd 2 ZnO 5

We investigate the physical properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd 2 ZnO 5 . Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 1.65 K. The magnetic order is found to be a 2–Q magnetic structure with the magnetic moments lying in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice planes comprising the tetragonal crystal structure of BaNd 2 ZnO 5 . The ordered moment for this structure is 1.9(1) μB per Nd ion. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that the crystal field ground state doublet is well separated from the first excited state at 8 meV. The crystal field Hamiltonian is determined through simultaneous refinement of models with both the LS coupling and intermediate coupling approximations to the inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility data. The ground state doublet indicates that the magnetic moments lie primarily in the basal plane with magnitude consistent with the size of the determined ordered moment.

Supermolecular structures of recrystallized starches with amylopectin side chains modified by amylosucrase to different chain lengths

Understanding the supermolecular structures of recrystallized starches is imperative to manufacture novel starches with controllable physicochemical properties enabling novel applications. In this study, native amylopectin (AP) from maize was modified to different chain lengths using amylosucrase from Neisseria polysaccharea. Native AP granules showed well-organized lamellar structures with a periodicity of ca. 9.0 nm whereas modified starches formed heterogeneous structures with the average crystallite size ranging from 19.77 to 29.88 nm. Acidic treatments eroded amorphous domains in both native AP granules and modified starch particles, producing nanocrystals composed of double helices. A-type nanocrystals (~40 nm) from native AP granules showed quadrangular shape with an acute angle of ca. 60°, while irregular B-type nanocrystals were observed for the modified starches. Molecular characterizations suggested that the nanocrystals had relatively uniform chain lengths (DP 16.5–25.2), and the helix length (the thickness of nanocrystals) was positively correlated to the thermal stability of starches.

High-resolution Bayesian spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) quasi-3-D Vs model of Utah FORGE site with a dense geophone array

SUMMARY We expand the application of spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) from typical 1-D Vs profiles to quasi-3-D imaging via Bayesian Monte Carlo inversion (BMCI) using a dense nodal array (49 nodes) located at the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) site. Combinations of 4 and 9 geophones in subarrays provide for 36 and 25 1-D Vs profiles, respectively. Profiles with error bars are determined by calculating coherency functions that fit observations in a frequency range of 0.2–5 Hz. Thus, a high-resolution quasi-3-D Vs model from the surface to 2.0 km depth is derived and shows that surface-parallel sedimentary strata deepen to the west, consistent with a 3-D seismic reflection survey. Moreover, the resulting Vs profile is consistent with a Vs profile derived from distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data located in a borehole at the FORGE site. The quasi-3-D velocity model shows that the base of the basin dips ∼22° to the west and topography on the basement interface coincident with the Mag Lee Wash suggests that the bedrock interface is an unconformity.

Hybridized quadrupolar excitations in the spin-anisotropic frustrated magnet FeI 2

Magnetic order is usually associated with well-defined magnon excitations. Exotic magnetic fluctuations with fractional, topological or multipolar character, have been proposed for radically different forms of magnetic matter such as spin-liquids. As a result, considerable efforts have searched for, and uncovered, low-spin materials with suppressed dipolar order at low temperatures. In this work, we report neutron-scattering experiments and quantitative theoretical modeling of an exceptional spin-1 system – the uniaxial triangular magnet FeI 2 – where a bright and dispersive band of mixed dipolarquadrupolar fluctuations emerges just above a dipolar ordered ground-state. This excitation arises from anisotropic exchange interactions that hybridize overlapping modes carrying fundamentally different quantum numbers. Remarkably, a generalization of spin-wave theory to local SU(3) degrees of freedom accounts for all details of the low-energy dynamical response of FeI 2 without going beyond quadratic order. Our work highlights that quantum excitations without classical counterparts can be realized even in presence of fully developed magnetic order.

Review of Emerging Potassium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract This is the first review on potassium–sulfur (K–S) batteries (KSBs), which are emerging metal battery (MB) systems. Since KSBs are quite new, there are fundamental questions regarding the electrochemistry of S‐based cathode and of K metal anode, as well as the holistic aspects of full‐cell performance. The manuscript begins with a critical discussion regarding the potassium–sulfur electrochemistry and on how it differs from the much better‐known lithium–sulfur. Cathodes are discussed next, focusing on the role of sulfur structure, carbon host chemistry and porosity, and electrolytes in establishing the reversible potassium sulfide K 2 S n phase sequence, the parasitic polysulfide shuttle, pulverization‐driven capacity fade, etc. Following is a discussion of solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs), including of hybrid solid–liquid systems that show much promise. Potassium metal anodes are then critically reviewed, emphasizing electrolyte reactions to form stable versus unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), covering the current understanding of potassium dendrites, and highlighting the deep‐eutectic K–Na alloying approaches for room temperature liquid anodes. The manuscript concludes with K–S batteries, focusing on cell architectures and providing quantitative performance comparisons as master plots. Unanswered scientific/technological questions are identified, emerging research opportunities are discussed, and potential experimental and simulation‐based studies that can unravel these unknowns are proposed.

Photosynthetic semiconductor biohybrids for solar-driven biocatalysis

Photosynthetic semiconductor biohybrids integrate the best attributes of biological whole-cell catalysts and semiconducting nanomaterials. Enzymatic machinery enveloped in its native cellular environment offers exquisite product selectivity and low substrate activation barriers while semiconducting nanomaterials harvest light energy stably and efficiently. Here, we illustrate the evolution and advances of photosynthetic semiconductor biohybrids focusing on the conversion of CO 2 to value-added chemicals. We begin by considering the potential of this nascent field to meet global energy challenges while comparing it to alternate approaches. This is followed by a discussion of the advantageous coupling of electrotrophic organisms with light-active electrodes for solar-to-chemical conversion. We detail the dynamic investigation of photosensitized microorganisms creating direct light harvesting within unicellular organisms while describing complementary developments in the understanding of charge transfer mechanisms and cytoprotection. Lastly, we focus on trends and improvements needed in photosynthetic semiconductor biohybrids in order to address future challenges and enhance their widespread adoption for the production of solar chemicals.

Membrane-Free Zn/MnO 2 Flow Battery for Large-Scale Energy Storage

The traditional Zn/MnO 2 battery has attracted great interest due to its low cost, high safety, high output voltage, and environmental friendliness. However, it remains a big challenge to achieve long-term stability, mainly owing to the poor reversibility of the cathode reaction. Different from previous studies where the cathode redox reaction of MnO 2 /MnOOH is in solid state with limited reversibility, in this work a new aqueous rechargeable Zn/MnO 2 flow battery is constructed with dissolution–precipitation reactions in both cathodes (Mn 2+ /MnO 2 ) and anodes (Zn 2+ /Zn), which allow mixing of anolyte and catholyte into only one electrolyte and remove the requirement for an ion selective membrane for cost reduction. Impressively, this new battery exhibits a high discharge voltage of ≈1.78 V, good rate capability (10C discharge), and excellent cycling stability (1000 cycles without decay) at the areal capacity ranging from 0.5 to 2 mAh cm -2 . More importantly, this battery can be readily enlarged to a bench scale flow cell of 1.2 Ah with good capacity retention of 89.7% at the 500th cycle, displaying great potential for large-scale energy storage.
