Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing of Wide-Area Damping Controller for Field Implementation in Large-scale Power Grid

In our previous work, an adaptive measurement-driven wide-area damping controller (WADC) for suppressing inter-area oscillations has been proposed and a hardware prototype was developed and validated through hardware-in-the-loop tests. As a continuation of the work, this paper introduces a WADC software prototype to handle the realistic challenges for field implementation in the control room of the power grid. The WADC software is developed and operated as an openPDC adapter with a graphical user interface (GUI) to monitor the WADC inputs and output, the communication delays and other variables. The software prototype has been fully tested through an enhanced hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test setup. Its performance is verified under various realistic communication uncertainties, such as random time delays and data losses, with different communication protocols. The experiment results have proven the WADC software can deliver sufficient damping to suppress the targeted oscillation mode in handling various communication uncertainties for future field deployment.

Measurement-Based Approach for Inertia-Trend Analysis of the US Western Interconnection

Rising deployment of inverter-based resources (IBRs), characterized by a lack of rotating mass, is decreasing the total inertia of the system. This can lead to an increased Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) during the disturbance and false activation of protective devices. There is a need to assess the inertia over the past decade amidst the evolving landscape of renewable energy sources to develop strategies for integrating energy storage, enhancing resilience measures, and ensuring the stable and reliable operation of the grid. Therefore, a realistic assessment of the inertia trend using a measurement-based approach that addresses the limitations of existing models is proposed. An inertia study of the Western Interconnection in the United States is performed utilizing the data from 2013 to 2022, obtained from FNET/ GridEye network. The three-second RoCoF time window is chosen for the study as it showed an optimum balance between a strong correlation with the power imbalance (ΔP) and minimum inclusion of primary response from governor. The obtained inertia trend result shows a small percentage declination of inertia over the decade. By examining the result alongside a generation mix graph, insights are gained into the dynamic interplay between shifting energy landscape and system inertia.

Flexible Boundary Design for a Chattanooga Microgrid Powered by Landfill Solar Photovoltaic and Battery Storage

Landfill based microgrids powered by renewable energy aid reliability and resiliency while promoting environmental and energy justice. This paper aims to design a flexible boundary algorithm for a proposed Chattanooga landfill microgrid with the ability to shrink or expand its boundaries based on the available power from the solar PV and battery storage. This helps to improve resiliency unlike the conventional fixed boundary microgrids. The flexible boundary algorithm determines the combination and switching status of the intellirupter ® which changes the microgrid boundaries to achieve power balance by dropping or energizing specific load sections. Finally, the microgrid with flexible boundary was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and performed satisfactorily when tested under various scenarios.
