Further investigation on the fusion of 6 Li with 209 Bi target at near-barrier energies

The complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for 6 Li+ 209 Bi were measured using the in-beam γ-ray method around the Coulomb barrier. The cross sections of (deuteron captured) incomplete fusion (ICF) products were re-quantified experimentally for this reaction system. Here, the results reveal that the ICF cross section is equivalent to that of complete fusion (CF) above the Coulomb barrier and dominant near or below the Coulomb barrier. A theoretical calculation based on the continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) method was performed for the aforementioned CF and ICF cross sections; the result is consistent with the experiments. The universal fusion function (UFF) was also compared with the measured CF cross section for different barrier parameters, demonstrating that the CF suppression factor is significantly influenced by the choice of potential, which can reflect both dynamic and static effects of breakup on the fusion process.

Superconductivity Observed in Tantalum Polyhydride at High Pressure

We report experimental discovery of tantalum polyhydride superconductor. It was synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions using diamond anvil cell combined with in situ high-pressure laser heating techniques. The superconductivity was investigated via resistance measurements at pressures. The highest superconducting transition temperature T c was found to be ∼ 30 K at 197 GPa in the sample that was synthesized at the same pressure with ∼ 2000 K heating. The transitions are shifted to low temperature upon applying magnetic fields that support the superconductivity nature. The upper critical field at zero temperature μ 0 H c2 (0) of the superconducting phase is estimated to be ∼ 20 T that corresponds to Ginzburg–Landau coherent length ∼ 40 Å. Our results suggest that the superconductivity may arise from I 4 ¯ 3 d phase of TaH 3 . It is, for the first time to our best knowledge, experimental realization of superconducting hydrides for the VB group of transition metals.

Nucleon localization function in rotating nuclei

An electron localization function was originally introduced to visualize in positional space bond structures in molecules. It became a useful tool to describe electron configurations in atoms, molecules, and solids. In nuclear physics, a nucleon localization function (NLF) has been used to characterize cluster structures in light nuclei, formation of fragments in fission, and pasta phases appearing in the inner crust of neutron stars. In the case of a deformed rotating nucleus, several NLFs can be introduced, depending on the definition of the spin-quantization axis, direction of the total angular momentum, and self-consistent symmetries of the system. Contributions to the NLF from the current density, spin-current tensor density, and density gradient terms are negligible in the nuclear interior. The oscillating pattern of the simplified NLF can be explained in terms of a constructive interference between kinetic-energy and particle densities. The characteristic nodal pattern seen in the NLF in the direction of major axis of a rotating nucleus comes from single-particle orbits carrying large aligned angular momentum. The variation of the NLF along the minor axis of the nucleus can be traced back to deformation-aligned orbits.
