Spin-triplet superconductivity from intervalley Goldstone modes in magic-angle graphene

Here, we consider magic-angle graphene in the doping regime around charge neutrality, and we study the connection between a recently proposed intervalley coherent insulator at zero doping and the neighboring superconducting domes. The magic-angle graphene continuum model has an emergent U(1) valley-charge conservation symmetry and an emergent SU(2) symmetry corresponding to opposite spin rotations in the two valleys. The intervalley coherent insulator spontaneously breaks both these emergent symmetries, and as a result has four Goldstone modes that couple to doped charge carriers. We derive the effective interaction mediated by the Goldstone modes, and we study its role in electron pair formation. The SU(2) Goldstone modes generate a ferromagnetic interaction, which is attractive in spin-triplet pairing channels and repulsive in spin-singlet channels. From a weak-coupling BCS calculation, we find the leading superconducting instability in the p-wave channel.

Inter-valley coherent order and isospin fluctuation mediated superconductivity in rhombohedral trilayer graphene

Superconductivity was recently discovered in rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG) in the absence of a moiré potential. Superconductivity is observed proximate to a metallic state with reduced isospin symmetry, but it remains unknown whether this is a coincidence or a key ingredient for superconductivity. Using a Hartree-Fock analysis and constraints from experiments, we argue that the symmetry breaking is inter-valley coherent (IVC) in nature. We evaluate IVC fluctuations as a possible pairing glue, and find that they lead to chiral unconventional superconductivity when the fluctuations are strong. We further elucidate how the inter-valley Hund’s coupling determines the spin-structure of the IVC ground state and breaks the degeneracy between spin-singlet and triplet superconductivity. Remarkably, if the normal state is spin-unpolarized, we find that a ferromagnetic Hund’s coupling favors spin-singlet superconductivity, in agreement with experiments. Instead, if the normal state is spin-polarized, then IVC fluctuations lead to spin-triplet pairing.

Detecting Symmetry Breaking in Magic Angle Graphene Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

A growing body of experimental work suggests that magic angle twisted bilayer graphene exhibits a "cascade" of spontaneous symmetry-breaking transitions, sparking interest in the potential relationship between symmetry breaking and superconductivity. However, it has proven difficult to find experimental probes which can unambiguously identify the nature of the symmetry breaking. Here, we show how atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy can be used as a fingerprint of symmetry-breaking order. Further, by analyzing the pattern of sublattice polarization and "Kekulé" distortions in small magnetic fields, order parameters for each of the most competitive symmetry-breaking states can be identified. In particular, we show that the "Kramers intervalley coherent state," which theoretical work predicts to be the ground state at even integer fillings, shows a Kekulé distortion which emerges only in a magnetic field.

Correlated interlayer exciton insulator in heterostructures of monolayer WSe 2 and moiré WS 2 /WSe 2

Moiré superlattices in van der Waals heterostructures have emerged as a powerful tool for engineering quantum phenomena. Here, in this work, we report the observation of a correlated interlayer exciton insulator in a double-layer heterostructure composed of a WSe 2 monolayer and a WS 2 /WSe 2 moiré bilayer that are separated by ultrathin hexagonal boron nitride. The moiré WS 2 /WSe 2 bilayer features a Mott insulator state when the density of holes is one per moiré lattice site. When electrons are added to the Mott insulator in the WS 2 /WSe 2 moiré bilayer and an equal number of holes are injected into the WSe 2 monolayer, a new interlayer exciton insulator emerges with the holes in the WSe 2 monolayer and the electrons in the doped Mott insulator bound together through interlayer Coulomb interactions. The interlayer exciton insulator is stable up to a critical hole density in the WSe 2 monolayer, beyond which the interlayer exciton dissociates. Our study highlights the opportunities for realizing quantum phases in double-layer moiré systems due to the interplay between the moiré flat band and strong interlayer electron interactions.
