The cost of performance - A comparison of the space transportation main engine and the Space Shuttle main engine

This paper compares the cost of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) and the Space Transportation Main Engine (STME) proposed by the Advanced Launch System Program. A brief description of the SSME and STME engines is presented, followed by a comparison of these engines that illustrates the impact of focusing on acceptable performance at minimum cost (as for the STME) or on maximum performance (as for the SSME). Several examples of cost reduction methods are presented.

Advanced OTV engine concepts

The results and status of engine technology efforts to date and related company funded activities are presented. Advanced concepts in combustors and injectors, high speed turbomachinery, controls, and high-area-ratio nozzles that package within a short length result is engines with specific impulse values 35 to 46 seconds higher than those now realized by operational systems. The improvement in life, reliability, and maintainability of OTV engines are important.

Advanced space engine component technology status

Key to the achievement of maximum benefit from the Space Tug transportation system is the availability of a low-cost, high-performance engine system. To define this engine system, studies have been conducted under Air Force and NASA direction, and pertinent hardware technology programs have been initiated. From among the several candidate systems studied, the cryogenic, staged-combustion cycle, high chamber pressure system in conjunction with a large-area-ratio nozzle was selected for component and subsystem demonstration. Main turbopump, high-area-ratio thrust chamber, preburner, and igniter components are being evaluated. A brief description of the engine capabilities, the main liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen turbopump/preburner, and the main thrust chamber programs are presented; designs and progress in fabrication are shown and test results discussed.

Turbopumps for cryogenic upper stage engines

Small, high-performance LO2 and LH2 turbopump assembly configurations were selected, detail designs were prepared and two of each unit were fabricated with each unit consisting of pump, turbine gas generator, and appropriate controls. Following fabrication, development testing was conducted on each type to demonstrate performance, durability, transient characteristics, and heat transfer under simulated altitude conditions. Following successful completion of development effort, the two LO2 turbopump units and one LH2 turbopump unit were acceptance tested as specified. Inspection of the units following development testing revealed no deleterious effects of testing. The test results of LO2 turbopump assembly testing correlated well with predicted performance while the LH2 turbopump test results, though generally consistent with predicted values, did show lower than anticipated developed head at the design point and in the high flow range of operation.

Advanced space engine preliminary design

Analysis and design of an optimum LO2/LH2, combustion topping cycle, 88,964 Newtons (20,000-pound) thrust, liquid rocket engine was conducted. The design selected is well suited to high-energy, upper-stage engine applications such as the Space Tug and embodies features directed toward optimization of vehicle performance. A configuration selection was conducted based on prior Air Force Contracts, and additional criteria for optimum stage performance. Following configuration selection, analyses and design of the major components and engine systems were conducted to sufficient depth to provide layout drawings suitable for subsequent detailing. In addition, engine packaging to a common interface and a retractable nozzle concept were defined. Alternative development plans and related costs were also established. The design embodies high-performance, low-weight, low NPSH requirements (saturated propellant inlet conditions at start), idle-mode operation, and autogenous pressurization. The design is the result of the significant past and current LO2/LH2 technology efforts of the NASA centers and the Air Force, as well as company-funded programs.

Oxygen/hydrogen component technology status.

The advanced technology applicable to oxygen/hydrogen systems for auxiliary propulsion systems and other high energy upper stage applications is being developed. Turbopump, propellant conditioner (gas generator and heat exchanger), thruster, igniter, valve, and flow controller components are being evaluated. A brief description of turbopump, conditioner, valve, and thruster experimental programs is presented. Design and hot-firing test data are discussed.
