Telecommunications systems design

The general configuration of deep space telecommunication systems is reviewed with regard to the design criteria necessary to insure the integrity of the system's telemetry, command, and tracking functions. The signal to noise spectral density ratios that characterize telecommunications performance are defined in terms of the link parameters. For design control, a statistical approach to predict link performance and to assess its uncertainty is described.

Receiver design and performance characteristics

The basic design, principles of operation, and characteristics of deep space communications receivers are examined. In particular, the basic fundamentals of phase-locked loop and Costas loop receivers used for synchronization, tracking, and demodulation of phase-coherent signals in residual carrier and suppressed carrier systems are addressed.

Telemetry system

The means of telemetering digital data from a spacecraft to the Deep Space Network is addressed. Phase shift keying and uncoded quadriphase shift keying modulations are discussed along with demodulation and decoding systems. Telemetry system losses and noisy reference performance for suppressed carrier receivers are also examined.

A coupled phase-locked loops system for carrier tracking improvement

A system that couples several phase-locked loops to improve carrier tracking performance is considered. It coherently combines the received carrier signals at geographically separated ground antennas to increase the total effective aperture. The received carrier's phases are automatically aligned to enhance the received carrier signal-to-noise ratio. The system's tracking performance is assessed in terms of rms phase jitter. It is shown that the phase-locked loop in the first receiver, where the carrier arraying is performed, tracks the received carrier phase using the received carrier power from all receivers.

Demodulation of PPM for Reed-Solomon coded optical space channel

The paper proposes a delta-max demodulator for Reed-Solomon coded M-ary PPM modulation over optical (laser) channels including satellite-to-satellite and deep-space-vehicle-to-relay-satellite communications. This demodulator is compared with the threshold demodulator currently in use, and the two demodulators are shown to have identical performance in the absence of background noise. The delta-max demodulator is found to outperform the threshold demodulator as the intensity of background noise increases.

The effect of noisy carrier reference on telemetry with baseband arraying

Imperfect carrier reference causes a degradation in detection performance in coherent communication systems. A measure of this degradation is the radio loss, which is the amount of increase in data signal to noise ratio (SNR) per bit required to achieve the same bit error rate when carrier reference is perfect. Performance analysis and numerical results are obtained for the Voyager high rate telemetry link with maximum likelihood convolutional decoding. The arraying of antennas provides not only improved performance due to an increase in effective antenna aperture, but also a decrease in radio loss with respect to a single antenna. This telemetry link performance improvement is a function of the carrier loop SNR and data bit error rate. When the carrier loop SNR's are low, it provides a significant improvement in the telemetry link performance since the decrease in radio loss with respect to a single station is substantial.

Performance of convolutionally coded unbalanced QPSK systems

An evaluation is presented of the performance of three representative convolutionally coded unbalanced quadri-phase-shift-keying (UQPSK) systems in the presence of noisy carrier reference and crosstalk. The use of a coded UQPSK system for transmitting two telemetry data streams with different rates and different powers has been proposed for the Venus Orbiting Imaging Radar mission. Analytical expressions for bit error rates in the presence of a noisy carrier phase reference are derived for three representative cases: (1) I and Q channels are coded independently; (2) I channel is coded, Q channel is uncoded; and (3) I and Q channels are coded by a common 1/2 code. For rate 1/2 convolutional codes, QPSK modulation can be used to reduce the bandwidth requirement.

Performance of unbalanced QPSK in the presence of noisy reference and crosstalk

The problem of transmitting two telemetry data streams having different rates and different powers using unbalanced quadriphase shift keying (UQPSK) signaling is considered. It is noted that the presence of a noisy carrier phase reference causes a degradation in detection performance in coherent communications systems and that imperfect carrier synchronization not only attenuates the main demodulated signal voltage in UQPSK but also produces interchannel interference (crosstalk) which degrades the performance still further. Exact analytical expressions for symbol error probability of UQPSK in the presence of noise phase reference are derived.

Cascaded coherent tracking systems with time-varying channels

A performance analysis is presented of a two-way coherent tracking system (of the type used for spacecraft tracking and navigation) in which the transmitted signals have pass through linear time-varying channels. The performance of the system is characterized by the steady state probability density function of the reduced phase error process in the second tracking loop, the system considered consisting of two first-order phase locked loops in cascade. While the log normal channel, which arises in communication through planetary atmospheres, was used as the channel model, the results can be extended to other channels, such as the Rice and Rayleigh channels.

A Practical Statistical Model for Telecommunications Performance Uncertainty

A statistical method, the probability distribution method, is presented which will give the probability of link performance values. The advantages of a design control procedure are preserved and optimum use of the system capabilities is permitted by improving the accuracy and completeness of the system model.

A statistical model for telecommunication link design

An evaluation is conducted of the current telecommunication link design technique and a description is presented of an alternative method, called the probability distribution method (PDM), which is free of the disadvantages of the current technique while retaining its advantages. The PDM preserves the simplicity of the design control table (DCT) format. The use of the DCT as a management design control tool is continued. The telecommunication link margin probability density function used presents the probability of achieving any particular value of link performance. It is, therefore, possible to assess the performance risk and other tradeoffs.

On first cycle slip time of phase-locked loops in cascade

Precise measurement and spacecraft tracking are obtained by using phase-locked loops in cascade in two-way communications links. Statistics on cycle slip time are of vital importance in system planning and design. This paper presents: (1) results of a computer simulation study of the mean time to first cycle slip of cascade phase-locked loops preceded by bandpass limiters, and (2) the determination of probability distributions of cycle slip. Numerical results are obtained for a typical coherent communication system.

A double-loop tracking system.

A nonlinear analysis which can be used to assess certain statistical characteristics of double-loop tracking systems is presented. It takes into account the mutual coupling effects of the loops in the system. Two approaches are taken to obtain steady-state probability density functions (pdf's) of the system phase errors. From these pdf's, important system performance statistics, e.g., the phase-error variances, can be calculated, thus illustrating the application and usefulness of the analysis. The analysis is applied to a satellite transponder as an example.

Two-way coherent tracking systems.

Review of some results pertinent to the development of nonlinear theory on two-way coherent tracking systems. In particular, the model of cascaded systems is presented, and approximations to steady state probability density functions of the two-way system phase and Doppler error are developed. From these, certain numerical results required in the design and planning of these systems are derived.
