Non‐Linear Optical Properties of the ( RE ) 3 CuGeS 7 Family of Compounds

Abstract Non‐linear optical materials must possess a balanced combination of laser‐induced damage threshold (LDT) and second‐harmonic generation (SHG) and be phase matchable. In our previous work, chiral and polar La 3 CuGeS 7 was identified as a promising non‐linear optical material. Herein, we report the optimization of non‐linear optical properties through replacement of La with smaller lanthanides. It is determined that Gd 3 CuGeS 7 exhibits the best combination of SHG (1.6× AgGaS 2 at 88–105 μm particle size) and LDT (3× AgGaS 2 , 89 MW/cm 2 ) and is phase matchable. Based on changes in metal‐sulfur bond lengths and angles, we further propose structural optimization through solid‐solution formation and doping.

Evolution of Bonding and Magnetism via Changes in Valence Electron Count in CuFe 2– x Co x Ge 2

A series of solid solutions, CuFe 2–x Co x Ge 2 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.0), have been synthesized by arc-melting and characterized by powder X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetic measurements, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and electronic band structure calculations. All compounds crystallize in the CuFe 2 Ge 2 structure type, which can be considered as a three-dimensional framework built of fused MGe6 octahedra and MGe 5 trigonal bipyramids (M = Fe and Co), with channels filled by rows of Cu atoms. As the Co content (x) increases, the unit cell volume decreases in an anisotropic fashion: the b and c lattice parameters decrease while the a parameter increases. The changes in all the parameters are nearly linear, thus following Vegard’s law. CuFe 2 Ge 2 exhibits two successive antiferromagnetic (AFM) orderings, corresponding to the formation of a commensurate AFM structure, followed by an incommensurate AFM structure observed at lower temperatures. Additionally, as the Co content increases, the AFM ordering temperature (TN) gradually decreases, and only one AFM transition is observed for x ≥ 0.2. The magnetic behavior of unsubstituted CuFe 2 Ge 2 was found to be sensitive to the preparation method. The temperature-dependent zero-field 57 Fe Mössbauer spectra reveal two hyperfine split components that evolve in agreement with the two consecutive AFM orderings observed in magnetic measurements. In contrast, the field-dependent spectra obtained for fields ≥ 2 T reveal a parallel arrangement of the moments associated with the two crystallographically unique metal sites. Electronic band structure calculations and chemical bonding analysis reveal a mix of strong M–M antibonding and non-bonding states at the Fermi level, in support of the overall AFM ordering observed in zero field. The substitution of Co for Fe reduces the population of the M–M antibonding states and the overall density of states at the Fermi level, thus suppressing the T N value.

Pd and octahedra do not get along: Square planar [PdS 4 ] units in non-centrosymmetric La 6 PdSi 2 S 14

Non-linear optical (NLO) materials require a balance of high second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal and laser damage threshold (LDT), as well as phase matchable behavior. Herein, we report a new member of the (RE) 6 (TM) x (Tt) 2 Q 14 family of compounds, La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 , which, unlike all other reported TM analogues crystallizing in hexagonal P6 3 space group, crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic P2 1 space group. The crystal structure contains chains of edge-sharing distorted square planar [PdS 4 ] units. The square-planar coordination of Pd in La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 exhibits remarkable NLO properties with high SHG (3.7 × AgGaS 2 ) and LDT (3 × AgGaS 2 ) values as well as phase matchability. This shows the promise of novel materials with distorted structural motifs for enhanced NLO properties. Further, upon formation of bimetallic chiral sulfides containing both Cu and Pd, Cu occupies the opposite faces of the octahedra forming [CuS 3 ] units while Pd can be stabilized in the center of PdS 6 octahedra in the hexagonal P6 3 crystal structure of La 6 Pd 0.5 CuSi 2 S 14 . This suggests that it is possible to form mixed metal systems which could further enhance NLO properties by incorporation of additional structural distortions.

Crystal Structure and Properties of Layered Pnictides BaCuSi2Pn3 (Pn = P, As)

Two novel layered compounds BaCuSi 2 Pn 3 (Pn = P, As) adopting new structure types are reported. As revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, both compounds are composed of unique Cu–Si–Pn layers featuring CuPn 3 and Si 2 Pn 6 structural motifs found in other archetypal pnictide materials. The stacking of the isostructural Cu–Si–Pn layers is different for phosphide and arsenide compounds. Synthesis from elements aided by in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction resulted in the obtainment of bulk powders with a minimized amount of admixtures. Experimentally measured physical properties of BaCuSi 2 As 3 unexpectedly showed metal-like behavior at temperatures above 15 K, despite the fact that density functional theory calculations predict a small band gap of 0.4 eV. BaCuSi 2 As 3 exhibits ultralow thermal conductivity, which can be explained by the combination of a layered crystal structure with alternating covalent and ionic bonding, which feature rattling of Cu atoms similar to that in tetrahedrites.

Synthesis, Crystal Growth, and Transport Properties of van der Waals Tetrel Pnictide GeAs 2

Here, bulk GeAs 2 was synthesized utilizing a vapor transport reaction with iodine. Thermal stability tests under dynamic conditions show that GeAs 2 decomposes below 700 K, in contrast to the reported congruent melting at 1029 K measured at saturated As vapor pressure. GeAs 2 is a p-type narrow bandgap (~0.4 eV) semiconductor. From a thermoelectric standpoint, GeAs 2 outperforms previous computational predictions in thermopower and thermal conductivity. Yet, electrical resistivity is significantly higher than predicted values, resulting in the low overall thermoelectric figure of merit. Aliovalent doping strategies for GeAs 2 should be developed to achieve reasonable thermoelectric performance.

Intermetallic Nanocatalysts from Heterobimetallic Group 10–14 Pyridine-2-thiolate Precursors

Intermetallic compounds are atomically ordered inorganic materials containing two or more transition metals and main-group elements in unique crystal structures. Intermetallics based on group 10 and group 14 metals have shown enhanced activity, selectivity, and durability in comparison to simple metals and alloys in many catalytic reactions. While high-temperature solid-state methods to prepare intermetallic compounds exist, softer synthetic methods can provide key advantages, such as enabling the preparation of metastable phases or of smaller particles with increased surface areas for catalysis. In this work, we study a generalized family of heterobimetallic precursors to binary intermetallics, each containing a group 10 metal and a group 14 tetrel bonded together and supported by pincer-like pyridine-2-thiolate ligands. Upon thermal decomposition, these heterobimetallic complexes form 10–14 binary intermetallic nanocrystals. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) computations help in better understanding the reactivity of these precursors toward the synthesis of specific intermetallic binary phases. Using Pd 2 Sn as an example, we demonstrate that nanoparticles made in this way can act as uniquely selective catalysts for the reduction of nitroarenes to azoxyarenes, which highlights the utility of the intermetallics made by our method. Employing heterobimetallic pincer complexes as precursors toward binary nanocrystals and other metal-rich intermetallics provides opportunities to explore the fundamental chemistry and applications of these materials.
