Electrochemical detection device

A standard pH reference electrode and a platinum cathodic electrode are positioned in a container with suitable nutrient medium for microbial growth plus the sample to be tested. The two electrodes are connected to electronic circuitry including an up/down counter whicn counts up for the first 80 minutes after a test has initiated. Then the potential between the two electrodes is tracked by the electronic circuitry and after there is a change of 10 mv a signal is sent to the up/down counter to cause it to reverse its count. When there is a additional 20 mv change in the potential between the two electrodes another signal is sent to the up/down counter, signalling it to stop. The resulting count on the counter is equal to the length of time for the inoculum to begin the production of measurable amounts of H2 after inoculation.

Independent power generator

A gas turbine powered aircraft auxiliary power system is described which is capable of efficiently supplying all aircraft auxiliary services both in flight and on the ground and is further capable of operating independently of the aircraft main engines. The system employs multiple gas turbine compressor stages, thereby accomplishing cabin pressurization, ventilation and heating.

Multichannel electrochemical microbial detection unit

The paper describes the design and capabilities of a compact multichannel electrochemical unit devised to detect and automatically indicate detection time length of bacteria. By connecting this unit to a strip-chart recorder, a permanent record is obtained of the end points and growth curves for each of eight channels. The experimental setup utilizing the multichannel unit consists of a test tube (25 by 150 mm) containing a combination redox electrode plus 18 ml of lauryl tryptose broth and positioned in a 35-C water bath. Leads from the electrodes are connected to the multichannel unit, which in turn is connected to a strip-chart recorder. After addition of 2.0 ml of inoculum to the test tubes, depression of the push-button starter activates the electronics, timer, and indicator light for each channel. The multichannel unit is employed to test tenfold dilutions of various members of the Enterobacteriaceae group, and a typical dose-response curve is presented.

Signal processing and display for electrochemical data

Two electrochemical electrodes provide signals; apparatus automatically determines reaction end point and displays lag period in time or cell concentration. Apparatus can be used with standard pH reference anode and platinum anode or with redox electrodes.

A power and load priority control concept as applied to a Brayton cycle turbo-electric generator.

This paper describes a system to regulate the speed and power output of a Brayton Cycle Power System under varying load. A typical user load profile is applied and a simple load priority and parasitic load is used for system regulation. Power storage is provided by batteries with charge and discharge converters to demonstrate support capability. The breadboard system is tested with the Brayton Cycle Demonstrator at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Manned Space Craft Center, Houston, Texas.

Voltage-programed control of turboalternator load

A power source and load-control concept was designed and tested for use with a Brayton cycle turboalternator. The concept provides power that adjusts to a range of loads while controlling alternator speed and isolating load-switching transients. The concept is also applicable to power-generating sources other than the Brayton cycle.
