The pNab experiment and the quest for ever better neutron beam polarization

The Nab and pNAB collaborations are conducting a program of studies of free neutron beta decay, with the primary goal of testing the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix that describes quark mixing due to the weak interaction. For this purpose, a large, novel electromagnetic spectrometer, the Nab spectrometer, has been designed, built, and placed in use to determine the correlation coefficients in unpolarized neutron beta decay: "a", the neutrino-electron correlation coefficient; and "b", the Fierz term. The subject of this paper is pNAB, the second phase of the program, that will deploy the same spectrometer with a polarized neutron beam to determine "A", the beta asymmetry; and "B", the neutrino asymmetry coefficients. A focus of this paper will be on the strategies to provide a high and precisely known neutron beam polarization.

Precision pulse shape simulation for proton detection at the Nab experiment

The Nab experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA, aims to measure the beta-antineutrino angular correlation following neutron β decay to an anticipated precision of approximately 0.1%. The proton momentum is reconstructed through proton time-of-flight measurements, and potential systematic biases in the timing reconstruction due to detector effects must be controlled at the nanosecond level. In conclusion, we present a thorough and detailed semiconductor and quasiparticle transport simulation effort to provide precise pulse shapes, and report on relevant systematic effects and potential measurement schemes.

On the density and field sensitivities of dielectronic recombination

Dielectronic recombination dominates the recombination rates of most ions in coronal plasmas at their temperatures of peak concentration. Because dielectronic recombination goes by way of high nl doubly excited levels, it is susceptible to collisional excitation and ionization, leading to a decreased rate. On the other hand, theoretical studies show that Stark mixing of the nl levels by a modest electric field enhances the dielectronic recombination rate severalfold. The ionization balance is computed here as as function of density, and it is found that the new results require increased emission measures to match the C IV emission line intensities observed in the sun and in late-type stars. They also make it more difficult to interpret the overall EUV emission line spectrum of the sun.
