Enhanced Ferromagnetism in Atomically Thin Oxides Achieved by Interfacial Reconstruction

Discoveries of ferromagnetic materials with ultrathin thickness are of great importance for both fundamental science and technological applications. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) provide promising candidates in the context of next‐generation spintronics, despite the severe decay of ferromagnetism as the thickness reduces to the nanometer regime. Here, in this work, an efficient strategy to eliminate the magnetic dead layer in atomically thin oxides is presented, by using the epitaxial interface of 3 d and 5 d oxide monolayers that reconciles both strong exchange interaction and large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Combining multiple experimental methods, a ferromagnetic transition in an ultrathin oxide heterostructure comprised of only one La 0.2 Sr 0.8 MnO 3 monolayer sandwiched by SrIrO 3 monolayer (total thickness of three unit‐cells) is unambiguously demonstrated. Remarkably, a largely enhanced saturation magnetization (2 µ B Mn −1 ) and Curie temperature (80 K) are observed for the single manganite monolayer, as compared to previously reported ferromagnetic monolayer oxides. The results demonstrate a general strategy for creating robust ferromagnetism in ultrathin TMOs, potentially enabling novel oxide spin‐orbitronic devices.

Large Spin-Orbit-Torque Efficiency and Room-Temperature Magnetization Switching in Sr Ir O 3 / Co-Fe-B Heterostructures

Spin-orbit-torque (SOT) switching is a potentially energy-efficient mechanism by which electrical current can control magnetization. We demonstrate room-temperature SOT switching in nanometer-thick Co⁢Fe⁢B/Sr⁢Ir⁢O 3 bilayers despite the amorphous nature of CoFeB and the interface. This behavior is attributed to the large spin Hall angle in Sr⁢Ir⁢O 3 as well as high spin transmission at the interface that contribute to the SOT efficiency ξ SOT . Our bilayers exhibit large ξ SOT of up to 1.4 and effective spin Hall conductivity of 0.9 ×10 5 (ℏ/2e)Ω –1 ⁢m –1 . In our bilayers, we observe unidirectional magnetoresistance and current-induced magnetization switching with a low critical current density of 1.38 ×10 10 A/m 2 at room temperature. Finally, our results are promising for heterostructures combining technologically relevant CoFeB with high spin-orbit-coupling oxides.

Toroidal polar topology in strained ferroelectric polymer

Polar topological texture has become an emerging research field for exotic phenomena and potential applications in reconfigurable electronic devices. Here, we report toroidal topological texture self-organized in a ferroelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride-ran-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)], that exhibits concentric topology with anticoupled chiral domains. The interplay among the elastic, electric, and gradient energies results in continuous rotation and toroidal assembly of the polarization perpendicular to polymer chains, whereas relaxor behavior is induced along polymer chains. Such toroidal polar topology gives rise to periodic absorption of polarized far-infrared (FIR) waves, enabling the manipulation of the terahertz wave on a mesoscopic scale. Our observations should inform design principles for flexible ferroic materials toward complex topologies and provide opportunities for multistimuli conversions in flexible electronics.

Enhanced Interface-Driven Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy by Symmetry Control in Oxide Superlattices

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) has recently been shown to emerge at interfaces of 3d and 5d transition-metal oxides (TMOs). However, strategies to systematically stabilize such interface-driven PMA still remains elusive, hindering further applications of this design approach. Here, tuning crystal symmetry is shown to be an effective means to engineer this interfacial phenomenon. The evolution of PMA strength as a function of ferromagnetic oxide thickness quantitatively reveals the competition between volume- and interface-specific contributions that determine the magnetic anisotropy. By applying different degrees of epitaxial strain, the relative contributions to PMA are modulated, clearly revealing their correlations with crystal symmetries. To be more specific, the volume anisotropy energy is found to be correlated with the tetragonal distortion of the ferromagnetic layer, while the interface anisotropy energy is mainly modulated by the octahedral tilting at the interface. With these insights, superlattices with enhanced interface-driven PMA and higher Curie temperature are realized. These findings reveal a route to engineering interface-driven PMA and associated magnetic phenomena in TMO heterostructures for future spintronic applications.

Emergent electric field control of phase transformation in oxide superlattices

Electric fields can transform materials with respect to their structure and properties, enabling various applications ranging from batteries to spintronics. Recently electrolytic gating, which can generate large electric fields and voltage-driven ion transfer, has been identified as a powerful means to achieve electric-field-controlled phase transformations. The class of transition metal oxides provide many potential candidates that present a strong response under electrolytic gating. However, very few show a reversible structural transformation at room-temperature. Here, we report the realization of a digitally synthesized transition metal oxide that shows a reversible, electric-field-controlled transformation between distinct crystalline phases at room-temperature. In superlattices comprised of alternating one-unit-cell of SrIrO 3 and La 0.2 Sr 0.8 MnO 3 , we find a reversible phase transformation with a 7% lattice change and dramatic modulation in chemical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties, mediated by the reversible transfer of oxygen and hydrogen ions. Strikingly, this phase transformation is absent in the constituent oxides, solid solutions and larger period superlattices. Our findings open up this class of materials for voltage-controlled functionality.
