Piezoceramic Microactuation for Robotic Space Exploration

From overview: Current approach for realization of small vehicles is evolutionary: through the miniaturization1 of existing wheeled/legged vehicles based on state of the art in miniature actuators and motors. However, such miniaturization does not lend itself to cost reduction concomitant with the size reduction because cost of the individual mobility components goes up by an order of magnitude or more for such miniature motors etc. which often need to be precisely hand assembled. An alternate approach with significant potential advantages, especially when traversing unusual and difficult terrain such as loose granular surfaes, is to imitate the mobility attributes of insects.

Antimisting kerosene: Low temperature degradation and blending

The inline filtration characteristics of freshly blended and degraded antimisting fuels (AMK) at low temperature are examined. A needle valve degrader was modified to include partial recirculation of degraded fuel and heat addition in the bypass loop. A pressure drop across the needle valve of up to 4,000 psi was used. The pressure drop across a 325 mesh filter screen placed inline with the degrader and directly downstream of the needle valve was measured as a function of time for different values of pressure drop across the needle valve. A volume flux of 1 gpm/sq in was employed based on the frontal area of the screen. It was found that, at ambient temperatures, freshly blended AMK fuel could be degraded using a single pass degradation at 4,000 psi pressure drop across the needle valve to give acceptable filterability performance. At fuel temperatures below -20 C, degradation becomes increasingly difficult and a single pass technique results in unacceptable filtration performance. Recirculation of a fraction of the degraded fuel and heat addition in the bypass loop improved low temperature degradation performance. The problem is addressed of blending the AMK additive with Jet A at various base fuel temperatures.

Electronic energy transfer and quenching in copolymers of styrene and 2-(2-prime-hydroxy -5-prime-vinylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole Photochemical processes in polymeric systems. X

Intensity and lifetime quenching of the polystyrene monomer and excimer fluorescence emission by a pendant quencher have been studied in the solid state and in solution for a series of copolymers of styrene and 2-(2-prime-hydroxy-5-prime-vinylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole. Two mechanisms of quenching have been identified. One involves interception of the migrating monomer excitation by the quencher, and the other involves a single-step Foerster energy-transfer process from the excimer traps to a quencher. The relative efficiencies of these two quenching mechanisms in the solid state and in solution have been compared and related to the efficiency of electronic energy migration. An estimate of the excimer trap concentration in solid polystyrene is also reported.

Research on antimisting fuel for suppression of postcrash aircraft fires

Recent experimental results in the field of post-crash aircraft fire suppression are reviewed, with emphasis given to antimisting kerosene fuel (AMK). Findings in three major areas of study are presented, including: rheological studies (skin friction, and heat transfer); fuel breakup processes and nozzle spray combustion; and the development of inline blenders for production of AMK at the refueling point. An interpretation of the results of the FAA/NASA Controlled Impact Demonstration of AMK fuel is also presented. It is concluded that AMK is a sound concept and offers several advantages over conventional fuels in any crash scenario involving post-crash fires.

Continuous inline blending of antimisting kerosene

A continuous inline blender was developed to blend polymer slurries with a stream of jet A fuel. The viscosity of the slurries ranged widely. The key element of the blender was a static mixer placed immediately downstream of the slurry injection point. A positive displacement gear pump for jet A was employed, and a progressive cavity rotary screw pump was used for slurry pumping. Turbine flow meters were employed for jet A metering while the slurry flow rate was calibrated against the pressure drop in the injection tube. While using one of the FM-9 variant slurries, a provision was made for a time delay between the addition of slurry and the addition of amine sequentially into the jet A stream.

Nonyellowing Polycarbonate for Outdoor Use

Two-step photochemical process prevents yellowing of polycarbonate plastics. Use of polycarbonate plastics growing in windows, aircraft glazing, and streetlight globes. New photochemical process causes formation of stabilizers bound to polymer chains and therefore cannot be leached out.

Electronic properties of carbon fibers intercalated with copper chloride

Copper chloride intercalated pitch-based carbon fibers are found to have electrical resistivities as low as 12.9 micro-ohm-cm, and are air- and thermally-stable at and above room temperature. This is therefore a good candidate system for conductor application. In addition, Shubnikov-deHaas quantum oscillatory effects were found, and electronic properties of the intercalated fiber are studied using magnetic fields to 20 tesla.

Clear Film Protects Against Ultraviolet Radiation

Acrylic film contains screeing agent filtering ultraviolet radiation up to 380 nanometers in wavelength but passes other components of Sunlight. Film used to protect such materials as rubber and plastics degraded by ultraviolet light. Used as protective cover on outdoor sheets or pipes made of such materials as polyethylene or polypropylene and on solar cells.

Metallic conductivity and air stability in copper chloride intercalated carbon fibers

Carbon-copper chloride intercalation compounds have been obtained by using variously graphitized carbon fibers as host materials. The resultant conductors are air stable, thermally stable to 450 K, have electrical resistivities as low as 12.9 microohm cm at room temperature, and have metallic conductivity temperature dependencies. These intercalated fibers have tensile strengths of 160000 psi, and Young's moduli of 25 x 10 to the 6th psi. For aerospace use, 1/(resistivity x density) is a figure of merit. On this basis, a reduction in resistivity by a factor of two will make this conductor competitive with copper.

Development of a weatherable acrylic elastomer for solar cell encapsulation

Poly-n-butylacrylate (PnBA) will be discussed as a potential candidate to be used in solar cell encapsulation. A new process has been developed in which PnBA can be readily cross-linked from a solvent-free syrup by a thermal process to give a highly flexible transparent film which does not creep significantly at temperature of up to 90 C. This process can be automated without the use of high cost capital equipment. Photodegradation of PnBA has also been modeled as a function of wavelengths and intensities. Its photostability will be discussed.

Synthesis and biological screening by novel hybrid fluorocarbon hydrocarbon compounds for use as artificial blood substitutes

A series of hybrid fluorochemicals of general structure R(1)R(2)R(3)CR(4) was prepared where the R(i)'s (i=1,2,3) is a saturated fluoroalkyl group of formula C sub N F sub 2n+1, and R(4) is an alkyl group C sub n H sub 2n+1 or a related moiety containing amino, ether, or ester functions but no CF bonds. Compounds of this class containing approximately eight to twenty carbons total have physical properties suitable for use as the oxygen carrying phase of fluorochemical emulsion artificial blood. The chemical synthesis, and physical and biological testing of pure single isomers of the proposed artificial blood candidate compounds are included. Significant results are given.
