Anomalous proximitized transport in metal/quantum magnet heterostructure Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 /Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7

Fluctuations of quantum spins play a crucial role in the emergence of exotic magnetic phases and excitations. The lack of the charge degree of freedom in insulating quantum magnets, however, precludes such fluctuations from mediating electronic transport. Here, we show that the quantum fluctuations of a localized frustrated magnet induce strong proximitized charge transport of the conduction electrons in a synthetic heterostructure comprising an epitaxial Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 ultrathin film on a single crystal of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . The proximity effects are evidenced by the scaling behavior of the Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 resistance in correspondence with the dynamic scaling of the dynamic spincorrelation function of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , which is a result of quantum fluctuations near a multiphase quantum critical point. The proximitized transport in Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 can be effectively tuned by a magnetic field through suppressing the quantum spin fluctuations (QSFs) as well as inducing transitions via magnetic anisotropy in Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . In this study, we establish a pathway for harnessing QSFs in magnetic insulators with electric transport, offering exciting prospects for potential applications in the realm of quantum spintronics.

Continuous Spin Excitations in the Three-Dimensional Frustrated Magnet K 2 Ni 2 ⁢(SO 4 ) 3

Continuous spin excitations are widely recognized as one of the hallmarks of novel spin states in quantum magnets, such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs). Here, we report the observation of such kind of excitations in K 2 Ni 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , which consists of two sets of intersected spin-1 (Ni 2+ ) trillium lattices. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurement on single crystals clearly shows a dominant excitation continuum, which exhibits a distinct temperature-dependent behavior from that of spin waves and is rooted in strong quantum spin fluctuations. Further using the self-consistent-Gaussian-approximation method, we determine that the fourth- and fifth nearest-neighbor exchange interactions are dominant. These two bonds together form a unique three-dimensional network of corner-sharing tetrahedra, which we name as a “hypertrillium” lattice. In conclusion, our results provide direct evidence for the existence of QSL features in K 2 Ni 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and highlight the potential for the hypertrillium lattice to host frustrated quantum magnetism.

Coupling of multiscale imaging analysis and computational modeling for understanding thick cathode degradation mechanisms

Here, using a thick NMC811 (LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 ) electrode as an example, we present a macro- to nanoscale 2D and 3D imaging analysis approach coupled with 4D (space + time) computational modeling to probe its degradation mechanism in a lithium-ion battery cell. Particle cracking increases and contact loss between particles and carbon-binder domain are observed to correlate with the cell degradation. This study unravels that the reaction heterogeneity within the thick cathode caused by the unbalanced electron conduction is the main cause of the battery degradation over cycling. The increased heterogeneity in the system will entail more cathode regions where the degree of active material utilization is uneven, leading to higher probabilities of particle cracking. These findings shed light on the crucial role of the electronic and ionic transportation networks in the performance deterioration of the thick cathode. They also provide guidance for cathode architecture optimization and performance improvement.

Editors’ Choice—Methods—Pressure Control Apparatus for Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium (Li) metal anodes are essential for developing next-generation high-energy-density batteries. However, Li dendrite/whisker formation caused short-circuiting issue and short cycle life have prevented lithium metal from being viably used in rechargeable batteries. Numerous works have been done to study how to regulate the Li growth in electrochemical cycling by using external stacking forces. While it is widely agreed that stack pressure positively affects the lithium plating/stripping process, the optimized pressure range provided by different works varies greatly because of the difference in the pressure control setup. In this work, a pressure control apparatus is designed for Li metal batteries with liquid and solid-state electrolytes (SSE). With considerations of minimizing cell to cell variation, a reusable split cell and pressure load cell are made for testing electrochemical cells with high precision pressure control. The capability of the designed setup is demonstrated by studying the pressure effect on the Li plating/stripping process.

Bridging Nano- and Microscale X-Ray Tomography for Battery Research by Leveraging Artificial Intelligence

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a non-destructive imaging technique in which contrast originates from the materials' absorption coefficient. The recent development of laboratory nanoscale CT (nano-CT) systems has pushed the spatial resolution for battery material imaging to voxel sizes of 50 nm, a limit previously achievable only with synchrotron facilities. Given the non-destructive nature of CT, in situ and operando studies have emerged as powerful methods to quantify morphological parameters, such as tortuosity factor, porosity, surface area and volume expansion, during battery operation or cycling. Combined with artificial intelligence and machine learning analysis techniques, nano-CT has enabled the development of predictive models to analyse the impact of the electrode microstructure on cell performances or the influence of material heterogeneities on electrochemical responses. In this Review, we discuss the role of X-ray CT and nano-CT experimentation in the battery field, discuss the incorporation of artificial intelligence and machine learning analyses and provide a perspective on how the combination of multiscale CT imaging techniques can expand the development of predictive multiscale battery behavioural models.

Artificial cathode electrolyte interphase for improving high voltage cycling stability of thick electrode with Co-free 5 V spinel oxides

Spinel-type cathode LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) has intrigued the transportation industry due to its high operating voltage and total elimination of the expensive cobalt element. However, LNMO cathode with high mass loading (> 3 mAh/cm 2 in areal capacity) has suffered from excessive capacity degradation upon long cycling. Here, a robust Al 2 O 3 surface layer is introduced to the thick LNMO electrode via atomic layer deposition (ALD). The capacity retention in full cells with the graphite anode is improved from 46.3% to 75.3% after 300 cycles with cutoff voltage up to 4.85 V, while enabling average Coulombic efficiency of 99.9% during the cycling. The post-mortem analyses reveal that the Al 2 O 3 surface layer would convert to Al-O-F /Al-F species upon cycling, offering stable interphase to protect the cathode material. Furthermore, these results demonstrate the significance of surface modification enabling high voltage cathode for next-generation LIBs.

Enabling high areal capacity for Co-free high voltage spinel materials in next-generation Li-ion batteries

The rapidly growing technological demand for lithium-ion batteries has prompted the development of novel cathode materials with high energy density, low cost, and improved safety. High voltage spinel, LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO), is one of the most promising candidates yet to be commercialized. The two primary obstacles for this material are the inferior electronic conductivity and fast capacity degradation in full cells due to the high operating voltage. By systematically addressing these limitations, we successfully develop a thick LNMO electrode with areal capacity loadings up to 3 mAh·cm –2 . The optimized thick electrode is paired with a commercial graphite anode at both the coin cell and pouch cell level, achieving a full cell capacity retention as high as 72% and 78%, respectively, after 300 cycles. We attribute this superior cycling stability to careful optimizations of cell components and testing conditions, with a specific focus improving electronic conductivity and high voltage compatibility. These results suggest precise control of materials quality, electrode architecture and electrolyte optimization can soon support the development of a cobalt-free battery system based on a thick LNMO cathode (>4 mAh·cm 2 ), which will eventually meet the needs of next-generation Li-ion batteries with reduced cost, improved safety, and assured sustainability.
