Investigation of Thermal Radiation under Pressurized Oxy-combustion Conditions

Thermal radiation of the gaseous and particle phases in a pilot-scale pressurized oxy-combustor is computationally studied. In particular, the radiation characteristics of gases and particles are estimated by employing the statistical narrow-band model and the large-particle model. It is found that thermal radiation of the particle cloud dominates in the combustor under a furnace temperature of 1500 K and when there is no substantial loss of particles to the walls. Another important observation is that radiation from the gas and particles can be approximately treated as a graybody under these conditions. More specifically, the results on the spectral radiation intensity of a gas comprising 40% (vol) H 2 O and 60% CO 2 show that when the pressure is increased to 15 bar, and the radiation pathlength is 100 cm, the spectral radiation profile of the gas phase approaches that of a blackbody at the respective temperature. In addition, the emissivity of the particulate cloud has been evaluated as a function of the particle concentration and diameter by employing the large-particle model. It is shown that the emissivity grows with the particle concentration but decreases with the particle size for the same mass of the particles. Finally, this outcome of the present study is expected to be used to validate the assumption of the gray-gas model adopted in the numerical simulations of pressurized oxy-combustion.

Crossover Flux and Ionic Resistance Metrics in Polysulfide-Permanganate Redox Flow Battery Membranes

A survey of 23 commercially available cation exchange membranes was performed for the downselection of membranes for use in a polysulfide-permanganate redox flow battery (pS-Mn RFB). The survey measured the flux of permanganate ions across a 0.1 mol L −1 concentration gradient as well as the membrane resistance in a 0.5 mol L −1 sodium chloride solution. The membranes exhibited the characteristic flux/resistance trade-off observed in most classes of membranes. To connect the individual membrane testing to how the membranes will perform in a device, cell performance data in a pS-Mn RFB was collected for three membranes from the survey. The coulombic, voltaic, and energy efficiency at low cycle counts aligned with the predictions from the membrane flux and resistance survey results. The study also identified three membranes—Fumapem F-930-RFS, Fumapem FS-715-RFS, and Aquivion E98-09S—that outperformed most other membranes regarding their position on the flux-resistance trade-off curve, indicating them to be good candidates for further testing.

Condensation-based redox flow battery rebalancing

In a redox flow battery (RFB), the base solvent of the electrolytes tends to migrate across the barrier layer from one electrode toward the other. This can result in a volume and concentration imbalance between the electrolytes that is detrimental to battery efficiency and capacity. Compatible electrolytes can be mixed to rebalance the system, but for incompatible electrolytes mixing is not a viable option. To this end, the RFB herein includes a separator that recovers base solvent from the vapor phase of one of the electrolytes and returns the recovered base solvent to the other electrolyte to thereby reverse the imbalance.
