A systematic study of lanthanide titanates (A 2 Ti 2 O 7 ) chemical durability: corrosion mechanisms and control parameters

Dense lanthanide titanates ranging from La 2 Ti 2 O 7 to Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 were synthesized by spark plasma sintering with similar micro-sized microstructure, and their chemical durability and degradation mechanisms were investigated by semi-dynamic leaching tests. Different corrosion mechanisms from incongruent to congruent dissolution were observed with preferential elemental releases of lanthanides in A 2 Ti 2 O 7 (A = La to Gd) and Ti in Er 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . Initial leaching was controlled by surface dissolution and long-term dissolution shifted to a diffusion-controlled mechanism for titanate pyrochlores from Sm 2 Ti 2 O 7 to Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . Both short-term and long-term leaching rates decreased from La 2 Ti 2 O 7 to Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , and materials became more corrosion resistant with decreasing ionic radius ratios of the rare-earth elements and titanium. Amorphous passivation films of several nm-thick enriched with Ti formed on the surfaces of the corroded materials, and the formation mechanisms were governed either by surface reorganization with preferential release of lanthanides or dissolution-precipitation from saturated bulk solutions with preferential release of titanium. Finally, these results demonstrate that the ionic size plays a dominant role in determining chemical durability of lanthanide titanates and a strong correlation is established among chemical composition/structural variation, passivation film formation and corrosion mechanisms, and materials chemical durability.

Effect of surface disorder on the chiral surface states of a three-dimensional quantum Hall system

We investigate the effect of surface disorder on the chiral surface states of a three-dimensional quantum Hall system. Utilizing a transfer-matrix method, we find that the localization length of the surface state along the magnetic field decreases with the surface disorder strength in the weak disorder regime but increases anomalously in the strong disorder regime. In the strong disorder regime, the surface states mainly locate at the first inward layer to avoid the strong disorder in the outmost layer. The anomalous increase of the localization length can be explained by an effective model, which maps the strong disorder on the surface layer to the weak disorder on the first inward layer. Our work demonstrates that surface disorder can be an effective way to control the transport behavior of the surface states along the magnetic field. We also investigate the effect of surface disorder on the full distribution of conductances P(g) of the surface states in the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) regime for various surface disorder strengths. In particular, we find that P(g) is Gaussian in the quasi-1D metal regime and log-normal in the quasi-1D insulator regime. In the crossover regime, P(g) exhibits highly nontrivial forms, whose shapes coincide with the results obtained from the Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar equation of a weakly disordered quasi-1D wire in the absence of time-reversal symmetry. Our results suggest that P(g) is fully determined by the average conductance, independent of the details of the system, in agreement with the single-parameter scaling hypothesis.

Immobilization of cesium and iodine into Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 perovskite-silica composites and core-shell waste forms with high waste loadings and chemical durability

Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$, a defect perovskite derivative, is a potential host phase to immobilize iodine and cesium with high waste loadings. In this work, two strategies were explored to form Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$-silica composites and a core-shell structure in order to improve chemical durability of waste form materials meanwhile maintaining high waste loadings. Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$ loadings as high as 70 wt.% were incorporated into a silica matrix to form silica-ceramic composites, and 20 wt.% Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$ was encapsulated into silica to form a core–shell structure by low temperature spark plasma sintering. Chemical durability of the composite and core-shell waste forms was evaluated by semi-dynamic leaching experiments, and Cs and I were incongruently released from waste form matrices. A BiOI alteration layer formed, acting as a passivation layer to reduce the release of radionuclides. The long-term iodine release rate was low (30 mg m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$) for the 70 wt.%Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$–silica composite leached in deionized water at 90 °C, which can be further reduced to 5 × 10$^{-3}$ mg m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ for the 20 wt.% core-shell structure. This work highlights a robust way to immobilize the highly mobile radionuclides with high waste loadings through encapsulation into durable matrices and a surface passivating mechanism that can greatly reduce the elemental transport from waste form materials and significantly enhance their chemical durability.

Topological Interface between Pfaffian and Anti-Pfaffian Order in $\textit{ν}$ = 5/2 Quantum Hall Effect

A recent thermal Hall experiment triggered renewed interest in the problem of $\textit{ν}$ = 5/2 quantum Hall effect, which motivated novel interpretations based on the formation of mesoscopic puddles made of Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian topological orders. Here, we study an interface between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states, which may play crucial roles in thermal transport, by means of state-of-the-art, density-matrix renormalization group simulations. We demonstrate that an intrinsic electric dipole moment emerges at the interface, similar to the “$\textit{p–n}$” junction sandwiched between $\textit{N}$-type and $\textit{P}$-type semiconductor. Importantly, in this work we elucidate the topological origin of this dipole moment, whose formation is to counterbalance the mismatch of guiding-center Hall viscosity of bulk Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states. In addition, these results imply that the formation of a dipole moment could be helpful to stabilize the puddles made of Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states in experimental conditions.

Cr-doped U 3 Si 2 composite fuels under steam corrosion

Dense Cr-doped U 3 Si 2 composite fuels were manufactured by spark plasma sintering, and the effects of Cr addition on mechanical properties and oxidation resistance were investigated. Furthermore, dynamic oxidation testing by thermogravimetric analysis revealed significantly improved oxidation resistance of U 3 Si 2 with minimal doping of 3 wt% Cr. The onset oxidation temperature increased to above 550 °C in air and ~520 °C in steam conditions for the 5 wt% and 10 wt% Cr-doped composites. Steam corrosion testing under 360 °C for 24 hours indicated well-maintained pellet integrity without pulverization for the 10 wt% Cr-doped U 3 Si 2 pellet which only showed minor surface oxidation. The first promising results open up the possibility of designing and manufacturing metal additive-doped U 3 Si 2 composite fuels with significantly-improved corrosion resistance as a potential candidate for accident tolerant fuels.

Construction of a series of new $\textit{ν}$ = 2/5 fractional quantum Hall wave functions by conformal field theory

In this paper, a series of $\textit{ν}$ = 2/5 fractional quantum Hall wave functions are constructed from conformal field theory(CFT). They share the same topological properties with states constructed by Jain's composite fermion approach. Upon exact lowest Landau level (LLL) projection, some of Jain's composite fermion states would not survive if constraints on Landau level indices given in the appendices of this paper were not satisfied. By contrast, states constructed from CFT are always in LLL. These states are characterized by different topological shifts and multibody relative angular momenta. Further, as a by-product, in the appendices we prove the necessary conditions for general $\textit{ν = p}$/(2$\textit{p}$ + 1) composite fermion states to have nonvanishing LLL projection.

Assessment of Satellite Surface Radiation Products in Highland Regions with Tibet Instrumental Data

This study presents results of comparisons between instrumental radiation data in the elevated Tibetan Plateau and two global satellite products: the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment - Surface Radiation Budget (GEWEX-SRB) and International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project - Flux Data (ISCCP-FD). In general, shortwave radiation (SW) is estimated better by ISCCP-FD while longwave radiation (LW) is estimated better by GEWEX-SRB, but all the radiation components in both products are under-estimated. Severe and systematic errors were found in monthly-mean SRB SW (on plateau-average, -48 W/sq m for downward SW and -18 W/sq m for upward SW) and FD LW (on plateau-average, -37 W/sq m for downward LW and -62 W/sq m for upward LW) for radiation. Errors in monthly-mean diurnal variations are even larger than the monthly mean errors. Though the LW errors can be reduced about 10 W/sq m after a correction for altitude difference between the site and SRB and FD grids, these errors are still higher than that for other regions. The large errors in SRB SW was mainly due to a processing mistake for elevation effect, but the errors in SRB LW was mainly due to significant errors in input data. We suggest reprocessing satellite surface radiation budget data, at least for highland areas like Tibet.
