The effects of velocity shear on the resonance absorption of incompressible MHD surface waves are studied. It is found that there are generally values of the velocity shear for which the surface wave decay rate becomes zero. In some cases, the resonance absorption goes to zero even for very small velocity shears. It is also found that the resonance absorption can be strongly enhanced at other values of the velocity shear, so the presence of flows may be generally important for determining the effects of resonance absorption, such as might occur in the interaction of p-modes with sunspots. Resonances leading to instability of the global surface mode can exist, and instability can occur for velocity shears significantly below the Kelvin-Helmholtz threshold. These instabilities may play a role in the development or turbulence in regions of strong velocity shear in the solar wind or the earth's magnetosphere.
The behavior of plasma and fields in the transition layer supporting MHD surface waves is analyzed, assuming that the total pressure fluctuations, delta-P(tot), can be taken to be nearly constant across this thin transition layer, with a value nearly the same as would be obtained if the MHD wave were supported by a truly discontinuous surface. Regarding therefore delta-P(tot) as known, the plasma and field equations in the transition layer were cast into a form in which delta-P(tot) appeared as a driving term. Among the two resonances that appear (the cusp resonance and the Alfven resonance) special attention is given to the Alfven resonance, which affects the velocity and magnetic field components normal to the background magnetic field. The effects of three types of viscosity on the Alfven resonance are considered, and it is shown that energy is pumped out of the surface wave into thin layers surrounding the resonant field lines.
The fundamental properties and some numerical results of the solution of the diffusion equation of an impulsive cosmic-ray point source in an uniform, unbounded and spherically symmetrical moving medium is presented. The diffusion-convection(D-C) function is an elementary composite function of the solution of the D-C equation for the particles injected impulsively from a diffusive point source into the medium. It is the analytic solution derived by the dimensional method for the propagation equation of solar cosmic rays in the heliosphere, i.e. the interplanetary space. Because of the introduction of convection effect of solar wind, a nonhomogeneous term appears in the propagation equation, it is difficult to express its solution in terms of the ordinary special functions. The research made so far has led to a solution containing only the first order approximation of the convection effect.
